Los Angeles - International (LAX / KLAX)
USA - California, November 1969
Remark
Photographer
N734PA (cn 19641/7) Clipper Flying Cloud, later Clipper Champion of the Seas. First flown on 10/31/1969, Pan Am brought this 747, line number 7, to LAX in November 1969 for it's debut showing and public display. I believe this was the very first time a 747 was at LAX. The photograph was taken on the Imperial Terminal ramp. 734PA flew for Pan Am until the airline ceased operations in 1991. Later with UPS as N691UP, the airplane has now been scrapped.

N738PA (cn 19645/14) "Clipper Defender". Also "Clipper Belle of the Sea". Clipper 2 heavy to JFK is awaiting take-off clearance runway 24L, routing round-the-world, eastbound. First flight was January 19, 1970. Delivery date was February 5, 1970. Wears FN 738 with Pan Am. Sadly, W/O August 4, 1983 at KHI (Karachi) with Pan Am as N738PA after she was damaged beyond economical repair due to a hard landing in a very severe storm. The round-the-world flights were very popular back then!

N741PA (cn 19648/17) Pan Am's 'Clipper Kit Carson' makes a historic First daytime touch-down on Rwy 16 at Sydney's new International Airport. Staff arranged stands so the public could see the First Boeing 747 arrival in Australia on 04Oct1970. Pan Am's B747-121 N734PA arrived at night, 9.5 hours late. Crowds turned out three days later when N741PA arrived on time. (Pan Am's First New York to London B747 Flight was on 21Jan1970.) Sydney has now seen the world's First A380 Airline arrival - Singapore Airlines 9V-SKA on 25Oct2007

Remark
Photographer
N748PA (cn 19652/26) "Clipper Hornet". This late morning shot epotimises a time when the downfall of Pan Am was unthinkable, with one Jumbo here likely to be New York bound and the other possibly for Boston. A Trident and One Eleven of British Airways await their turn with a Geneva-bound Coronado and N735PA taking up the rear.

China - Hong Kong, February 7, 1974
Remark
Photographer
D-ABYB (cn 19747/29) Rare window view from Lufthansa's second 747 (showing the port wing flaps) on approach to Kai Tak's Rwy 31 in 1974. The bay below is Chai Wan, on the NE coast of Hong Kong Island. Thanks to Joseph K.K. Lee for identifying the location. Lufthansa Boeing 747-130 D-ABYB took me to Hong Kong from Frankfurt, via Athens, Kuwait, Delhi and Bangkok. D-ABYB ("Hessen", Del: 13Apr1970) was the first civil Boeing 747 to crash - on 20Nov1974 at Nairobi Airport, Kenya, sadly with the loss of 59 lives. Low res photo.
