XE521 Described as an experimental compound helicopter, the (only) Rotodyne first flew in Nov 1957. There was airline and military interest but the programme was discontinued in 1962. One reason given was the noise from the pressure jets at the blade tips, however, the decision may have been political. A Vickers Vanguard can be seen at the left of the picture. |
