In the end of 2009 Qantas re-routed this flight 150 km to the north from its former route, giving some good diversity to relatively poor air traffic over my home. Now, after ANZ switched to 772s on their flight AKL-HKG-LHR, Qantas became the only airline flying pax 744s here every day during daytime. Here she is in the 2nd heading alignment cylinder with tail brake open. As it nears the landing site, the orbiter is steered into the nearest of two heading alignment circles called HACs. Each has a radius of 18,000 ft. The orbiter is now in subsonic flight, at 49,000 ft., and about 22 mile from its touchdown point. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) If one had an opportunity fly in formation with a space shuttle orbiter in the Earth's atmosphere, it would look like this. I purposely chose to have Earth background so that a sense of scale and depth can be gleaned. With commander Charles Hobaugh at the controls, "Atlantis" executed a sweeping right overhead turn to lose altitude and speed to line up for landing. The two sonic booms heralding the arrival in Florida occurred just prior. Welcome home "Atlantis"! Dear President Obama, Please keep them flying! |

86-0140 / DY (cn 100) "Last Lancer" on static display at Fairford was really the last ever production B-1B Lancer manufactured in 1986. Aircraft is assigned to 9th Bomb Squadron "Bats" (black band on the tail top) under 7th Bomb Wing dislocated at Dyess AFB in Texas, USA. 9th BS began flying with B-1B in 1993. The unit flew more than 300 combat sorties during its four-month deployment in mid- 2006 in support of the war on terrorism. |
