OV-104 (cn OV-104) Atlantis makes her final dive towards Earth after exiting out of the last Heading Alignment Circle (HAC). Almost 35 years after the final flight of the X-24B lifting body (which showed that accurate unpowered re-entry vehicle landings were operationally feasible), the first orbiter glides towards retirement. Atlantis has previously dodged retirement and currently there is a slight glimmer of another flight. She will be the stand by rescue orbiter for the final mission and may get the last laugh yet! |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis" sits on Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in Florida. It contains a 2-piece access tower system, the Fixed Service Structure (FSS) and the Rotating Service Structure (RSS). The FSS permits access to the Shuttle via a retractable arm. The RSS contains the Payload Changeout Room, which offers "clean" access to the orbiter's payload bay, protection from the elements and the orbiter. Here the RSS is open to uncover the orbiter prior to launch. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) If one had an opportunity fly in formation with a space shuttle orbiter in the Earth's atmosphere, it would look like this. I purposely chose to have Earth background so that a sense of scale and depth can be gleaned. With commander Charles Hobaugh at the controls, "Atlantis" executed a sweeping right overhead turn to lose altitude and speed to line up for landing. The two sonic booms heralding the arrival in Florida occurred just prior. Welcome home "Atlantis"! Dear President Obama, Please keep them flying! |
