Antofagasta de la Sierra
Argentina, July 13, 2005
Remark
Photographer
This must be one of the most remote locations in South America. I was very surprised to see this long runway here. Very few Argentineans and foreigners dare the 6-hour dirt road drive from the south to get here. Instead, I reached this place from the north (departing from San Antonio de los Cobres) after a real rough 9-hour ride on saw-like gravel road. Population in this Argentine area is as scarce as one man every 28 square Km! So I guess traffic in this airfield is not particularly intense…

Remark

LV-CET (cn 19000383) Instants after lift-off en route to JUJ. The airliner on the platform to the right is good-old AR B737-287C LV-JND (her active life spanned from 1970 until 2004) which is seen missing her horizontal stabilizer (the one on her starboard wing belongs to another AR B737-200). That means she´s beginning to be scrapped. Sadly.

Buenos Aires - Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP / SABE)
Argentina, January 13, 2005
Remark
Photographer
Someone said that AEP is called “Aeroparque” (Air Park) because it was built –in the 1940’s- on a park. I guess he’s right! On the left side of runway the executive apron and maintenance hangars. On the right side the Argentina Air Force facilities, cargo and passengers platforms & terminals.

Cachi (SA01)
Argentina, June 21, 2011
Remark
Photographer
In the middle of the mountains, and just 1km away from Cachi town, there's a runway (21-03) with a small apron and a windsock. That's all what you get here. I could see very few tyre marks, so I guess that there's few to none use of this airfield at all. Just for the record, I got in here by bike.

El Calafate - International (FTE / SAWC)
Argentina, January 8, 2005
Remark
Photographer
The new El Calafate Airport, located 18 km east of town in the middle of the southern Patagonian desert. The turquoise-colored waters from Lago Argentino have their origin in ice melting of the spectacular glaciers located on the west side of this lake. On the small ramp are Aerolineas 732 LV-ZZI and MD-88 LV-VGB. Picture taken from Aerolineas MD-81 LV-WFN seconds after takeoff (see how fast –due to strong west, headwind- a/c climbed).

El Calafate - Lago Argentino (ING / SAWA) (closed)
Argentina, January 7, 2005
Remark
Photographer
This is the former Lago Argentino Airport, located in the town of El Calafate, Southern Patagonia. It was operated by small to middle sized turboprops until it was replaced by the larger El Calafate International (FTE – SAWC). On the right, the terminal building and control tower can be seen. Now it is closed.

El Calafate - Lago Argentino (ING / SAWA) (closed)
Argentina, January 7, 2005
Remark
Photographer
Rwy 17 of old Airport seen from nearby elevated terrain. Terminal building is on the left. I though it was closed after FTE started operations, but a local guy told me it remains open to general aviation. What I’m sure –cause I saw it with my own eyes- is that this airfield is open to everybody, including trucks and cars that use the two runways as paved roads (see the dirt road that formed before the threshold) and the ramp as parking lot, and of course to pedestrians like me... ;-)

Esquel - Brigadier General Antonio Parodi (EQS / SAVE)
Argentina, January 25, 2009
Remark
Photographer
EQS serves the town of Esquel, 17 km SW. Its single rwy 05/23 is 2400 m. long. I think, currently (2009) the only scheduled flights are those of LADE, with comparative smaller aircraft.

Gobernador Gregores (GGS / SAWR)
Argentina, January 16, 2009
Remark
Photographer
Gobernador Gregores is a village literally in the middle of nowhere. Located in the south Patagonian Desert about half way between the Atlantic coast and the Chilean border, its airfield, GGS, has a 2600 m. paved rwy (built for the Argentina Air Force in 1978, when a war with Chile was looming) that is no longer operative. Instead, we landed with our LADE DHC-6 Twin Otter on a much shorter gravel rwy.

Jujuy - El Cadillal (JUJ / SASJ)
Argentina, July 2, 2005
Remark
Photographer
JUJ started operation back in 1966 with minor facilities. This terminal was built in 1978, when runway was also extended up to 9700 feet long. I find the big character’s design looks like a sort of circus or Western Rodeo open air festival banner :-( This airport is one of the few that are still run by the Government.

La Quiaca - Dr. Guillermo E. Snopek (SASQ)
Argentina, January 19, 2006
Remark
Photographer
I just needed to picture the northernmost airfield in Argentina –located at the Bolivian border-, since I had photographed the southernmost airport of my Country (pic # 987091). At the late nineties the 16/34 rwy was improved & extended, and the hangar & small facilities seen on the pic were built, hoping to attract a private operator. But they failed, nobody came, and this airfield was left completely abandoned in the desert, at 3400 m. a. sea level. Meanwhile, thugs have smashed all windows. Sadly.

Merlo - Valle del Conlara International (MLO / SAOS)
Argentina, January 30, 2009
Remark
Photographer
Aviation Oddities:Airport with no operators (pic 1 of 2). In Dec2001 San Luis Province Governor Adolfo Rodriguez Saa, joyfully opened this “international” world-class small airport. At the start Southern Winds operated here with Dash 8 on a 3 times per week basis. It did not last long. Then came Baires Fly with 2 weekly flights with SA-227 and CATA with their cargo F-27s.However,for the last 2 years or so,only privately or government owned aircraft have used MLO.The one and only car seen on the lot is mine!

Merlo - Valle del Conlara International (MLO / SAOS)
Argentina, January 30, 2009
Remark
Photographer
Aviation Oddities: Airport with no operators (pic 2 of 2). When I saw this nice cutting-edge designed airport idling in the Merlo Valley I couldn’t believe my eyes! If you take a look at the counters, no airline titles can be seen. Even the fine bar at the left has closed down, leaving tables solely as decorative objects. I wander if the jet-bridge has ever been used since opened December 2001! Guess, no more than three employees work here. MLO serves the town of Merlo, with a population of about 16,000.

As far as I know PMY has only three commercial flights per week. They are served by Andes Lineas Aereas with their MD-83s. Possibly LADE is still operating one or two fights with smaller aircraft, but I can’t be sure of that. PMY has a single rwy 05/23 2500 m long.
