G-AWN* This was taken from one of the Heathrow viewing terraces in 1974, the year that British Airways was inaugurated from the amalgamation of BEA and BOAC. Most of the joint fleet’s respective colour schemes were retained initially (as with this BOAC 747), with only the titles replaced with the new BA typeface, which was the subject of debate because of the diminutive 'a’ in 'airways’. A memorable television advertising campaign throughout 1974 did much to establish the company’s current brand identity. |
