G-BOPO (cn 021) It was a real treat to see an Optica in the air again. The Optica first flew in 1979 with the unusual ducted fan pusher propellor. It has excellent low speed characteristics and superb all round visibility making it a cheaper alternative to helicopters for surveillance operations such as Police work. It is hoped that these may soon re-enter production |

N19904 (cn 1997) Formerly owned/used by Howard Hughes (bought 1939 TWA). One of 10 307s built. First high-altitude commercial and first four-engine airliner in scheduled domestic service. Total of 500 flight hours over 25 years until hurricane damage in 1964. In 1974, wings/tail off, and fuselage converted motor yacht. The “plane-boat” features twin V-8 inboards incorporating the original aircraft cockpit controls that were used to fly the plane, propelling the vessel over 20 mph. Shame or glory? I am not sure. Only in Miami! |

Tow crew installs landing gear lock pins, and disconnects the nose landing gear drag link. Finally, orbiter is towed off to OPF#3. Green tabs shows TPS damages. The adverse effects of rocketing up to approx 225 miles up,sustained travel at 17500 mph and the fire and fury of re-entry. She is not beat up! |

450 meters of runway, a 13% slope, lots of turbulences in the afternoon and a big mountain in front of you: it's truly impressive when you land here for the first time, and it's one of the altiport I like most in the French Alps. It's also the place where Henri Giraud, founder of mountain flying, was based. |

HB-PFS (cn 28-8190083) Ever wondered what the famous "Axalp" military shooting range looks like from above? There you go: Along the peak to the left you can get as close as maybe 200m to FA-18 and F-5 Tigers demonstrating their abilities in mountaineous areas. Their targets where they aim at are located in the centre of the picuture (red). A hint of Meiringen air base can be seen to the very top left corner |

Bora Bora! I'm quite happy to have landed there as pilot in command of my rental aircraft. Picture was taken on the 150 nautical miles return leg Bora Bora - Tahiti, after a short sightseeing trip to Tupuai. 25 km in the distance, Tahaa island can be seen. During WWII, the USA built a military base here. The airfield, now 1500 meters long, is was is left of it. |

F-BVOB (cn 28-7405113) On final at Chinguetti airfield. The runway is made of crushed red stone, partly recovered with lighter colored sand. Deep inside Mauritania, Chinguetti is not far from the Richat structure, which has a diameter of almost 50 kilometres and has become a landmark for space shuttle crews. Chinguetti is the 7th most holy city of Islam. Onboard our PA28 F-BVOB, we are back from an overflight of this geological rarity. Notice the goats on the runway and our friends on the apron, in a TB20, C182 and DR253. |

CS-TKN (cn 624) This month of November had been really good for us spotters, with so many different things coming by!! Not being a different A/C, this one deserved some attention... These pilots were caught in some wind shear, and it was really close to total disaster, since the wing almost touched the ground! You can also see the stress in main landing gear... At that time, there were gusts up to 44 knots of crosswind, and heavy turbulence was reported! I'm glad that everything ended up well.. [Canon 40D + Sigma 120-400 |

The south half of the runway and the south parking apron. The big blue building on the lower left was the Government Flying Service hangar, which is still kept quite intact. Kai Tak will probably keep her coastal line, and this area is planned to develop various tourist facilities including a cruise liner terminal, a heliport, a big district park, and hotels etc. Does this photo recall your memory that once you took off from here into the sky in the good old days? About to land on runway 22 at Nosara. The displaced threshold ensures a safe landing due to the trees, powerlines and antennas. During the dry season, this airport becomes a real challenge for pilots due to the strong turbulence and surrounding mountains, even though the airport is just 2 miles from the beach. |

O.k. I know Kai Tak was the most thrilling airport of all times, and St.Maarten gives great shots too... but you hardly will find an airport that is situated as close to the mountains as here in the Obergoms in the middle of the Swiss Alps 1328m above sea level. This 790m long runway has a slope of up to 2% and was originally a Military airstrip. Today, this airport is frequented by gliders and single-engine props from Jun-Aug. In the wintertime the runway is used by thousands of cross-country skiers! |

While flying from Grand Canyon (GCN) to Las Vegas North (VGT) on a Scenic Airlines Twin Otter, we flew by this airstrip somewhere between the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead. It looks absolutely desolate out there in the middle of nowhere - sitting at the edge of a plateau with just a dirt track running to it and absolutely no buildings! Thanks to Erick McCarthy, Pat Doyle, Daniel Raskansky and Paul Freeman for the help in identifying the airfield. |
