N80FA (cn 10273/7) Working at Southend Airport in the 'Seventies produced some great opportunities. Just before N80FA departed on its ferry flight to Texas, I was able to fix up an air-to-air session from Cessna 172 G-ATLN. We flew as fast as possible, the Carvair as slow as it could with everything down. I can still hear those P&Ws roaring over the sound of my open window and the general racket in the Cessna. I even sold my car to one of the Falcon directors who duly loaded and flew home to the States with it - truly Car-via-air as Freddie Laker originally intended. This aircraft crashed in Alaska in 1997 as N103; another of the few remaining Carvairs suffered a similar fate up there in May 2007, so now only two survive. |

3D-NEG / ZN39-783EG (cn 193B-1066) An Airliners.net exclusive! As I was headed across the field, I stumbled upon a movie set. Apparently NBC is making a drama pilot about an airport starring Heather Locklear. This plane in fictitious livery and registration number is just a prop. Rumor has it that the working title of the show is "LAX". Check out all the crew members and equipment around the plane. Normally, I only take shots of SWA aircraft, but since this is a fake airline and a rare opportunity, I couldn't resist. |

Gate 17 at PVD is a bit lonely at this time of night. Aside from arriving pax from our delayed flight from BWI, there's absolutely nobody around. This is a good overview of Southwest's "Boarding lineup" that they use for their open seating. Compared to a lot of other waiting areas in other airports, Southwest has really upped the ante with their big, soft leather chairs with tables and power jacks. Sony Alpha a700, Tamron 17-50. |

L2940 This Skua landed on a frozen Norwegian lake and the cockpit area was set alight by the crew. The aircraft subsequently sank into the lake and was recovered in 1974. It is preserved at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in an incredible underwater diorama in 'as found' condition - no major restoration necessary! Near the camera is the starboard wing, the port is behind it. Front fuselage and engine is to the left, with the rear fuselage area in the distance. |

UR-82060 (cn 19530503763) The rear part of the upperdeck on the 225 is used as a huge electronics room. When inside this aircraft it's sometimes hard to believe you're in an airplane and not a ship, this could have been an "engine room". |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis" with a view of the forward reaction control system (RCS) with its covers one. The orbiter's reaction control system comprises the forward and aft RCS. The forward RCS is located in the forward fuselage nose area. The aft (right and left) RCS is located with the orbital maneuvering system in the OMS/RCS pods. The white blankets (seen here) coating the aircraft are made of coated Nomex felt reusable surface insulation. Due to prior space flight, they show the effects of heats and speed. |

She is rolling over to the VAB on her special transport vehicle (I always thought it had clown car wheels) under armed guard as is standard protocol. "Sir, please make way for the spacecraft" :-) |

The SCA + OV-105 "Endeavour" awaits to be towed into the special Mate/Demate Device that will be used to lift the orbiter off the back of the SCA. Once the orbiter is lifted up, the SCA will be towed back out and then the orbiter will be lowered to the ground. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" returns to Earth after the STS-119 mission to the ISS. Discovery’s main landing gear touched down at 15:13:17 EDT, followed by the nose gear at 15:13:40 EDT. The shuttle’s wheels stopped at 15:14:45 EDT, bringing the mission’s elapsed time to 12 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes, 33 seconds. Discovery traveled 5,304,140 miles during its journey. This sight and sound of the two sonic booms that herald the immenient arrival of the orbiter will soon be history. She may have as little as 2 more flights! |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis" sits on Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in Florida. It contains a 2-piece access tower system, the Fixed Service Structure (FSS) and the Rotating Service Structure (RSS). The FSS permits access to the Shuttle via a retractable arm. The RSS contains the Payload Changeout Room, which offers "clean" access to the orbiter's payload bay, protection from the elements and the orbiter. Here the RSS is open to uncover the orbiter prior to launch. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis" was towed from her hangar in Orbiter Processing Facility-1 to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) on 6 October, 2009 at about 7 a.m. EDT. The move, known as rollover, was competed at 8:25 a.m. when Atlantis arrived in the VAB transfer aisle. Here she sits awaiting the completion of the detailed photography that is used as reference to make sure that no damage happens to her during takeoff. These reference photos are compared with those taken in Space to identify potentially catastrophic damage. |

1-X Lifting off at 11:30 a.m. EDT for a two-minute powered flight. She generated 2.6 million pounds of thrust to accelerate to nearly 3 g's, Mach 4.76 and almost 150,000 feet. 6 minutes elapsed between launch and splashdown. She overcame the “triboelectrification rule” which kept the range “red” until a few minutes before the range window was closed. Here she is steering to the right to prevent her 5000 degree F flame from damaging the pad superstructure. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis" trails vapor and causes her own cloud effect as she continues through her energy management system that bleeds of the excess speeds prior to the 200+ MPH engine off touchdown. Here she is in the 2nd heading alignment cylinder with tail brake open. As it nears the landing site, the orbiter is steered into the nearest of two heading alignment circles called HACs. Each has a radius of 18,000 ft. The orbiter is now in subsonic flight, at 49,000 ft., and about 22 mile from its touchdown point. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) If one had an opportunity fly in formation with a space shuttle orbiter in the Earth's atmosphere, it would look like this. I purposely chose to have Earth background so that a sense of scale and depth can be gleaned. With commander Charles Hobaugh at the controls, "Atlantis" executed a sweeping right overhead turn to lose altitude and speed to line up for landing. The two sonic booms heralding the arrival in Florida occurred just prior. Welcome home "Atlantis"! Dear President Obama, Please keep them flying! |
