LV-HIJ (cn 22346) On April 30th 1964, this Curtiss Commando was cruising at 18000 feet from Copiapo (Chile) to Cordoba (Argentina), carrying 8 race horses from Lima (Peru) and 6 people (4 crew members). A sudden malfunction in an engine forced the crew to try an emergency landing on the half dried lake "Laguna Brava", at 4271 meters. All were rescued 2 days later, except the horses, and the plane which is in good condition but scrapped due to the difficulty and risk of repairing it there. Help with the editing from Gary W |

The front gear of the plane actually got up before the '1' marker but the body remains heavy. I think the pilots know exactly where to rotate. The Ilyushin also kicked up a large sandstorm on the beach and it was barely above it after finally airborne. IL86 is such a beast! [Nikon D2x, High speed crop mode] |

The runways are 750 ft apart, so there is still plenty of room between them. Incidentally, Lufthansa 455 is seen here returning to SFO due to an oil leak and eventual shutdown of the number 2 engine. Note rudder is deflected to the right compensating for the failed engine on the left side. |

PH-BUI (cn 21111/276) KLM Flight 9165 from Amsterdam to Dubai, cruising at FL350, seen from 1000 ft above. Maybe the largest trails I've ever seen... This B747, named 'Wilbur Wright', will be replaced December this year by a 747-400ER freighter |
