OV-104 (cn OV-104) "Atlantis". The orbiter's empennage in the launch position. The umbilical chords that provide ground power etc can be seen connected from the mobile launch platform (MLP) to the orbiter. The aluminium vertical tail consists of a structural fin surface, the rudder/speed brake surface, a tip and a lower trailing edge. The rudder splits into two halves to serve as a speed brake. Note the aft orbital maneuvering system/reaction control system pods. The shuttle launched 4 days later on a mission to the ISS. |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) Atlantis makes her final dive towards Earth after exiting out of the last Heading Alignment Circle (HAC). Almost 35 years after the final flight of the X-24B lifting body (which showed that accurate unpowered re-entry vehicle landings were operationally feasible), the first orbiter glides towards retirement. Atlantis has previously dodged retirement and currently there is a slight glimmer of another flight. She will be the stand by rescue orbiter for the final mission and may get the last laugh yet! |

She has been mated to rest of the stack (ET + 2 SRBs) over the last week. With assembly/checkout done, the crawler-transporter entered, picked up the MLP + "the stack" and carried them to launch pad 39A. Thousands of adoring KSC workers were outside to cheer her on for the 3.5 mile trip at 0.8MPH. So Long Discovery! |

With commander Charles Hobaugh at the controls, "Atlantis" executed a sweeping right overhead turn to lose altitude and speed to line up for landing. The two sonic booms heralding the arrival in Florida occurred just prior. Welcome home "Atlantis"! Dear President Obama, Please keep them flying! |
