Sandberg-Boland Tsunami
Reno - Reno-Stead (RTS)
USA - Nevada, September 9, 1991
Remark
Photographer
N39JR (cn 001) "Tsunami", a custom built Unlimited class racer is seen in the pits at the Reno Air Races. This aircraft was designed by Bruce Boland for air racing and despite the similarity in appearance, is not a modification of a P-51 Mustang. The aircraft was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin and was very fast. Despite this, it only won one Unlimited Gold Race (in Sherman Texas in 1990). It was destroyed in a crash several months after this picture was taken, killing the owner, John Sandberg.

USA - Nevada, September 1997
Remark
Photographer
N57LR (cn 87-1002) "Miss Ashley II" in the pits at the 1997 Reno Air Races. Bill Rogers built this Unlimited class racer by combining the fuselage of a P-51 Mustang (built from plans obtained from NASM) with the wings and horizontal tail of a Lear Jet 23 (cn 23-018). The aircraft was powered by a Rolls Royce Griffon with counter rotating propellers, taken from an Avro Shackleton patrol bomber. Miss Ashley II was destroyed in a crash at the Reno Air Races in 1999 and its pilot Gary Levitz was killed.
