OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" starts accelerating and her roll to get into the orbital insertion angle for the very last time. At this moment she has 142,917,535 miles on the odometer and will accrue approx. 5 million more. If you look closely, the red uniform of Commander Steve Lindsey in the front cockpit's side window. As designed two covers of the front reaction control system nozzles are falling of with one about to be burned in the lower part of the picture and other is at the mid deck level. So long Discovery! |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) Atlantis makes her final dive towards Earth after exiting out of the last Heading Alignment Circle (HAC). Almost 35 years after the final flight of the X-24B lifting body (which showed that accurate unpowered re-entry vehicle landings were operationally feasible), the first orbiter glides towards retirement. Atlantis has previously dodged retirement and currently there is a slight glimmer of another flight. She will be the stand by rescue orbiter for the final mission and may get the last laugh yet! |

OV-104 (cn OV-104) Most casual observers remark "how beat up the shuttle is". Well..about 5 hours before this photo, she was flying at approx. 17500mph. She re-entered Earth and went through 1650 °C (3000 °F) heat of atmospheric reentry. The white blankets (seen here) coating the aircraft are made of coated Nomex felt reusable surface insulation. The white low-density fibrous silica batting material has a quilt-like appearance. Coming back from the Heavens involves going through Hell. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" departs high bay #4 for STS-133 mission (38th & final). Last time she will do this if plans do not change..again. The shuttle stack's (orbiter + external tank + 2 solid rocket boosters) height: 56.14 m (184.2 feet) tall. It sits on the mobile launch platform (MLP) which is 7.6 m (25 feet) tall. The MLP rest on the transporter which is approx. 6.1 m (20 feet) tall. Total height = 69.84 m (223.13 feet). The United Space Alliance workers at the different levels show the scale of this vehicle. |
