01 Preserved inside the Lithuanian Air Force base at Siauliai. During the Cold War this airfield was under intense scrutiny, being a westerly Soviet fighter base. RAF crews frequently scrambled to intercept missions from here. The world has changed since then and now NATO forces (recently a squadron of RAF Tornados) are stationed at Siauliai, providing defence for the Baltic states themselves. All that remains of the past is this Soviet Sukhoi, with Red Star markings sympathetically painted out. |

CCCP-70224 (cn 1G138-42) Built in Poland by PZL Mielec on 17-Jul-1972 and initially used in the Lithuanian SSR branch of Aeroflt agricultural department. In 1987 it was transferred to DOSAAF and in 1989 to Kaunas Aviation Sport Club. Operated until 1995 (as LY-AGF) by the Vilnius Flying Club. Now restored back to the way she looked on 23-Aug-1989 when she was flown (against the orders of the DOSAAF) to support the 2-million people human-chain linking Vilnius to Tallinn, supporting the return to independence of the Baltic states. |

Vilnius Airport is located just 7km from the city centre of Lithuania's capital. Passenger flights started in 1944, with the monumental architectural terminal building being opened in 1954. The building was substantially expanded in the 1990s, but the Soviet neo-classical frontage was cleverly retained. A brand-new terminal building is now under construction - let's hope they retain their sense style and occasion. |

The rather sad remnants of Barysiai Aerodrome (also known as Meskuicia & Meskuiciai) in central Lithuania. With its 3281ft asphalt runway, this former Soviet civilian airport was the very first Aviation Base of the Lithuanian Air Force with their independence in 1991. The fledging Air Force were based here with their 20 Antonov An-2s, four Aero L-39Cs and two Let L-410UVP Turobolets. In Dec-1994 the Air Force moved out to Zokniai (which then became known as the 1st Air Base). A few light aircraft are still based here but the once-great Barysiai now gradually decays... |
