N381HA (cn 1114) Passing the very famous Mauna Kea volcano and its telescope observatory at the summit. Located on the island of Hawaii (Big Island), this dormant volcano reaches an altitude of almost 14,000 feet making it Hawaii's highest peak and the world's tallest mountain measured from its base at the sea floor. The beautiful ocean, clear blue sky, and colorful winglet of our A332 make a nice contrast with the almost Martian-like landscape; it's hard to believe that this area (along with the peak of neighboring volcano, Mauna Loa) gets snow during the winter! |

I love the sun ray that points directly to the airport. At the bottom-right you can see the port of Rafina. I present to you , India's highest airfield where civilian aircraft land! Welcome to Leh, capital of the Ladakh region in Northern India. Set amongst the Himalayas, at 11,500 feet MSL, there is only one entry and exit route into this Airport. Planes have to make a steep left bank between two high mountains and approach the runway. The runway has no lights and hence, no night time landing is possible. An interesting fact is, that on a full moon night, the army operates a few flights, because the air is so clean the moon lights up the whole area as if it were daylight! Thanks Phil from EDDL Photography for the edit. |

This small airfield became operational on the 28th April 1941. The RAF flew Spitfires from here during WWII and was decommissioned in April 1946. These days it is used for much more leisurely pursuits such as the Cornish Parachute Centre and private flying. |

Interesting, at their website Sudan's CAA mentions 'HSGA' as ICAO-code for El Geneina in West-Darfur. Also, the website states there are two runways paved with concrete, which might not the case for the shorter runway. Mid-2007 an Egyptian company was constructing a new airport -a bit further out of town- with a tarmac runway. |

TF-FGB / 1022 (cn C0348) Taken close to the current eruption in southern Iceland, where molten lava has been coming up for a week. This is taken from CAP-10, TF-UFO through the plastic with a 28-70mm lens, as the closeness of the canopy does not allow a bigger lens. The lava fortunately came up between two glaciers, otherwise a major flood of melting glacier might have caused casualties and property damage. The eruption is at an altitude of 1100 meters and the temperature at the time of the photo was -15 degrees Centigrade. This has been a very big tourist attraction and many people have walked for over 5 hours from the south to the site and then back for another 5 hours. The trip took us 20 minutes from the airfield at Mosfellsbær. |

N5008F (cn S60A-3281) What a view! This air-to-ground overview depicts the launch sites of the International Balloon Fiesta. As this was the last day/event of the fiesta called 'Mass Ascension,' due to the shower passed through the area at the break of dawn, most of special shape balloons have canceled the flight. Still, as you can see, many balloons are now preparing for launch. This photograph was taken from "That a way" flown by David Bobel (N4508B) who took me to the air for the first time. Flying in the mountains gave me a ton of photo oppertunities. This is possibly the coolest, located at the top of a mountain near Asheville the airport elevation is 4,400 feet and the tallest part of the mountain was 6,000 feet. You need permission to land there but it looks like there is a nice resort and golf course next to it. Notice the vibrant colours of the leaves as they start to turn. |
