The reticulated look is because of the effects of high speed (mach 26) space flight and the replacement of damaged thermal tiles with new ones over the course of her 38 previous flights since 1984. Here she is being hung vertically for the photo record of all the surfaces. Any damage after launch can be then identified by photo comparison with post launch shots taken by the ISS astronauts on approach to it;thus help prevent a "Columbia" type failure. |
