NC17334 (cn 1920) WOW!!! Nice to meet this pretty old guy with a small flag on the cockpit. Spot this photo without expectation when I am waiting for the arrival of Northwest B742's last international flight from Tokyo in the morning. I never saw DC3 in such a busy airport during the morning peak time other than in the flight museum.[Canon 350D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM ]

USA - New York, January 5, 1947
Remark
Photographer
NC21746 (cn 2104) AA203 was operating BAL - DCA and was unable to land at DCA due to heavy snow. Flight retrurned to BAL and held for 75 min, again unable to land due to snow. Crew decided to go to PHL but was unable to use the PHL radio dang due to static. AA203 then headed northeast into worsening weather conditions, with only 30 min of fuel left. The crew decided to crash land on Jones Beach, Long Island. NC21746 was salvaged and sold as scrap.

American Airlines (Flagship Detroit Foundation)
Douglas DC-3-178
Off-Airport - Fort Lauderdale
USA - Florida, May 6, 2006
Remark
Photographer
NC17334 (cn 1920) If you look closely, a great deal of the Ft.Lauderdale beach is reflected in the shiny mirror-like fuselage interrupted only by rivets. The aqua color tint on the underside is caused by the reflection of the surface of the Atlantic Ocean which is just out of sight in this picture. She is doing a high speed pass (an oxymoron for a DC-3?) over the Atlantic Ocean's surface. 1937 vintage back in AA "Flagship Detroit" collars.

El Paso - International (ELP / KELP)
USA - Texas, Early 1940's
Remark
Photographer
NC16013 (cn 1551) Flagship Virginia. Photo taken by my late father William C.Wall Sr. around 1940 and scanned from the original Kodachrome slide. El Paso native and resident John Paul Jones has confirmed that this is indeed El Paso and reports the following: "Originally it [the airport] was built by Standard Airways in 1935 and was known by that name till Standard was absorbed by the new American Airways, soon to become American Airlines. The city of El Paso bought the property and moved their Municipal Airport there after making improvements in 1936 but American remained the prime tenant and it was identified as such." I thank Mr. Jones very much for his help positively identifying the airport in this picture.

Remark
Photographer
NC25673 (cn 2213) "Flagship Big Spring". Taken by my late father (W.C. Wall Sr) at an unknown location. The trademark AA flag, flown from the FO's window, is an interesting aspect of this photograph. Flew for AAL, 1940-1947, then sold to Trans Texas. At last report, leased by Continental Airlines and painted in CAL 1950s colors. Possibly still on the air show circuit as N25673.

Douglas DC-6
Detroit - Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW / KDTW)
USA - Michigan, October 1965
Remark
Photographer
N90730 (cn 43035/61) Delivered new to American Airlines on April 8, 1947. Later converted to a freighter, and went on to fly as CP-927, XA-FIB, again as N90730, and finally as CP-1654. On March 8, 1993, it crashed on takeoff at Santa Rosa Airport in Bolivia. The aircraft overran the 1500m grass runway and caught fire. The occupants escaped, but the aircraft, after nearly 46 years in service, was destroyed. Photo taken by my great uncle and scanned from a slide. Thanks to David Lednicer for retouching the old slide.

Oklahoma City - Will Rogers World (OKC / KOKC)
USA - Oklahoma, February 1958
Remark
Photographer
N90766 (cn 43544/211) "Flagship Hartford" - This is an American Airlines DC-6B photographed in Feb. 1958 at Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City. I was 14 years old at that time and I would ask my mom to drop me off at the airport on Saturday so that I could watch airplanes all day. Mom would let me used her cheap little camera she used during the war years that did use 120 film but had a one element lens with a shutter that had a small spring that flipped a flat piece of metal over a small fixed aperture.
