We had to follow the An-12 that is still on the runway, through the Kabul valley. Not too hard since she left a huge smoke trail for us to follow. Ahead of the runway are the suburbs of Kabul, the huge hills and beyond those you can clearly see the icy peaks of the HinduKush mountains (19.000ft ASL). Imagine the performance calculations needed for a heavy departure! What a view. |

C-GATH / 404 (cn 208B1244) At a temperature of -43 Celcius the whole city acts as a giant fog machine, smothering the airport in fog. The nice circular contrail is made by a First Air ATR-43 holding at the VOR, waiting for the fog to lift. |

NC18100 (cn 1601) The DC-4E was designed to have twice the capacity of the DC-3 with a range of 2200 miles. Provision was made for pressurisation, but was not fitted. The prototype first flew on 7 June 1938. After testing, it was handed over to United in 1939 for airline trials, but was deemed to be too large and complex for airline demand of the day. The small upper windows were to illuminate sleeping accomodation. Sold to Japan in late 1939. Obtained from UAL 60 years ago. |
