After just there was gap into a fog, through I were able to take this photo. On the final approach turbulent jets dispelled the fog with circular structures. Located on the island of Hawaii (Big Island), this dormant volcano reaches an altitude of almost 14,000 feet making it Hawaii's highest peak and the world's tallest mountain measured from its base at the sea floor. The beautiful ocean, clear blue sky, and colorful winglet of our A332 make a nice contrast with the almost Martian-like landscape; it's hard to believe that this area (along with the peak of neighboring volcano, Mauna Loa) gets snow during the winter! |

We had to follow the An-12 that is still on the runway, through the Kabul valley. Not too hard since she left a huge smoke trail for us to follow. Ahead of the runway are the suburbs of Kabul, the huge hills and beyond those you can clearly see the icy peaks of the HinduKush mountains (19.000ft ASL). Imagine the performance calculations needed for a heavy departure! What a view. |

I had to make this shot to show all my respect and admiration to Air Tahiti Nui who saved the best trip of my life. This aircraft was the only one to leave Europe to the US the 16th despite the airpace closure. The atlantic was only ours for 12h. NX51BZ (cn 2009-1) MFR 2009. NO, this is not photoshop. Two pilots, one photographer & one crazy guy carefully planned, talked about, practiced and executed this photograph. The jumper stood like this for over 3 minutes & 3 passes over the jump zone. Good balance, a very smooth pilot & smooth air made it possible. |
