D359 Sitting atop Space Launch Complex 6 at Vandenberg AFB, A Delta 4 rocket is about to send a classified satellite into orbit for the National Reconnaissance Office. SLC-6 was built in the 1960s for the military Manned Orbiting Laboratory missions (caneled), then transformed in the early 1980s into the West Coast space shuttle launch site, a program terminated after the Challenger accident in 1986. It saw a first launch of any kind, finally, in the 90s with 3/4 failed Athena rockets, and finally D4 in 2005. |
