Boulton Paul Defiant I
Hendon (closed)
UK - England, November 29, 2003
Remark
Photographer
N1671 / D-EW The Defiant had only a rear gun turret - no forward-firing armament at all. Powered by the same Merlin engine as the Spitfire and Hurricane the Defiant did not enter service until late 1939. Early daylight engagements were successful as German pilots mistook the Defiants for Hurricanes and attacked from behind into a deadly concentration of fire. This success was short lived. First pic of a Defiant on a.net.

Boulton Paul Defiant I
Hendon (closed)
UK - England, November 1974
Remark
Photographer
N1671 The only surviving example of 1064 Defiants built, flying with 307 (Polish) Sqn in WWII coded 'EW-D' (now appears on the aircraft at Hendon) and later with 153 and 285 Sqn. The Merlin-powered Defiant was initially successful but once German pilots became aware of the rear and upward firepower, it was severely hampered by the extra weight of the turret. Put aside for preservation as long ago as 1944, first displayed at St Athan in 1960 and moved to the RAF Museum in 1971, back in night-fighter black finish

Curtiss BFC-2 Goshawk
Pensacola - NAS / Forrest Sherman Field (NPA / KNPA)
USA - Florida, October 16, 2006
Remark
Photographer
9332 / 2-B-13 The Curtiss-Wright BFC-2 was an inter-war biplane, primarily a light bomber. This example was flown by the High Hats squadron of the USS Saratoga. With their BFC-2s, the squadron were the first to develop dive-bombing tactics. This original Goshawk is one of only two remaining in the world (the other is reportedly in Poland). Preserved at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL.

Remark

N88972 / VO-B (cn 100-23644) Taken from the viewing mound at Paine Field; Historic Flight Foundation's "Grumpy" does a low fly-by. As well as all the new Boeings this is a great place to see flying warbirds on weekends. This B25 was delivered to the USAAC in 1943 and served with their advanced flying school; January 1944 went to RCAF's Central Flying School. February 1962 to civilian registry initially in Canada but in 1964 to the USA.
