CF-JWP (cn 9089) Sitting in the storage yard of the Reynolds-Alberta Aviation Museum. It's being used for parts to build showcase aircraft for the museum. There's not many parts left to pick from - even the antenna on top front is broken. I'll bet this plane could tell a few stories!

Westland WS-61 Sea King Mk48
Off-Airport - Gavere
Belgium, November 3, 2001
Remark
Photographer
RS05 (cn WA835) There's a little story behind this picture. Every year Radio 2, a regional radio station, organises a contest for Eastern Flemish libraries. They always try to transport the trophy in an original way. In 2001 a Belgian Air Force Seaking was hired to do this job. You can see it landing on the local football pitch. Also note the firemen in the background with foam extinguishers, in case something goes wrong.

DHL Air Ambulance (Light Into Europe)

UK - England, April 16, 2003
Remark
Photographer
N32LE (cn 32R-8329016) First pic of this a/c on a.net, and an interesting story: This aircraft belongs to "Light Into Europe" (a British charity) and operates at the request and supervision of the Romanian Ministry of Health. Launched on October 22, 1998, the ambulance is entirely funded by DHL and the Ministry of Health (the latter pay just for the fuel and parking fees). Beneficiaries of the DHL Air Ambulance can be any person in Romanian territory, irrespective of nationality, financial condition or political affiliation, who is in poor health and requiring emergency transport to a hospital.

17171 (cn 43309) I don't have the full story of this aircraft, but it has been sitting there since it ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing sometime around 1973. It doesn't seem to have sustained much damage (except for the nose and underside maybe). Usuable items (engines, wings, etc.) were salvaged. [Canon EOS D30 + Canon EF 28-80, 1/750]

USA - Maryland, December 8, 1947
Remark
Photographer
NC41970 This photo was taken by my Grandfather. He was one of the engineers that designed this aircraft. This is the first prototype and it was actually flown by Igor Sikorsky on a test flight. Never went in to production. This may be the only photo that exists of this helicopter. I have newspaper and company documentation telling the story of this aircraft. 6005 Eastern Ave, Baltimore.

Mojave (MHV)
USA - California, October 1, 2003
Remark
Photographer
N568FE (cn 47827/294) Ex N132AA, this airliner has a special story, being one of the very few who survived a full bath in salted water, after ending her landing on runway 04 in the lagoon of Tahiti, on december 23, 2000. With many other DC-10 and A310, she is now part of the FedEx "reserve fleet", awaiting cargo conversion in the desert. Adhesive tape is widely used in MHV, even to apply a new registration !

China, September 1, 2003
Remark
Photographer
B-0002 (cn 0002) Never saw this aircraft before and looks like B707, right? This is the one of two Y10s China ever produced. Sadly, it only flew for several test flights and sat there for ever because of many reasons!! This is a sorrowful story for Chinese aircraft manufacture industrial and I hope China can produce own aircrafts in the near future.

Cerfontaine (EBCF)
Belgium, May 23, 2004
Remark
Photographer
A real belgian story! You build a brand new airfield with expensive modern buildings near the lake of l'Eau d'Heure...but you just forget to ask the authorization before and also to install correct drains. The result is the white cross. A concrete runway should also be added. The only traffic in sight is grass cutting in process on the runway...

Tustin - MCAS (closed)
USA - California, October 24, 2002
Remark
Photographer
When visited in October 2002 the former Tustin MCAS was closed awaiting a decision regards future use. This is one of the two hangars constructed in 1942 to house anti-submarine Blimps during World War II. It is still one of the largest free standing wooden structures in the Western World. This view gives some idea of the size: over 400 yards long and over 18 stories high.

Remark
Photographer
44-77559 (cn 32955) Bet this aeroplane could tell some stories! Delivered to the USAAF in December 1944, it was withdrawn from military service in 1959. By 1987 it languished in a dealer's yard beside Davis-Monthan AFB. Thankfully, it was rescued in recent years and moved to Chino, California for eventual restoration.

Glendale - Grand Central Air Terminal (closed)
USA - California, October 8, 2003
Remark
Photographer
This was the main terminal building of Grand Central Air Terminal, Los Angeles' first airline airport. Dedicated in 1929, the airport closed in 1959, a few years after the airlines had moved to Burbank airport. Southern California's first air service to New York was flown from this ramp by Charles Lindbergh. The airport has been replaced by an industrial park, but one hangar also remains. An Internet search yields much of the airport's story.

Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster
Columbia - Metropolitan (CAE / KCAE)
USA - South Carolina, April 21, 2005
Remark
Photographer
N747FE (cn 208B0238) The story as I heard it was that a vehicle's brakes either failed or were incorrectly set. It rolled across the ramp and struck the fuselage of this Cargomaster. The whole tail aft of the aft cabin bulkhead will need to be replaced. The left wing was removed for installation on another damaged Cargomaster.

MyTravel Airways
Airbus A330-243
Sharjah - International (SHJ / OMSJ)
United Arab Emirates, November 28, 2004
Remark
Photographer
OY-VKF (cn 309) This small bird is checking out her big brother´s landing gear and wings. One thing makes the large difference between both "birds": The smaller one has no problems to fly away, but the My Travel "bird" are grounded after technical problems shortly before take off and waits for some equipment brought by another MyTravel A330 somewhat later. And the moral of this story: Strength only is not enough.

English Electric Lightning F1A
Wycombe Air Park - Booker (EGTB)
UK - England, June 22, 2005
Remark
Photographer
XM172 (cn 95059) A rather ironic story for this Lightning. Once the proud gate-guard at RAF Coltishall, she was moved here for renovation and eventual display as an aviation monument on a roundabout in Farnborough. Since arriving she was lent to the BBC, who lied by saying that Jeremy Clarkson owned it. Now the funds for the Farnborough project have dried up and British Airways (the owners of Booker) want her off their land. If £20k cannot be found, she will be scrapped. Perhaps Clarkson could stump up the funds?

Remark
Photographer
007 A MiG-21 operated by the Israel Air Force? This aircraft has a story to tell: Reputed to have defected (ex Iraqi AF) this MiG spent some time in the U.S.A. for evaluation before it returned to Israel. The serial '007' has been allocated by someone with a sense of humuor. It has recently been repainted keeping the James Bond serial number.

Ankara - Etimesgut (LTAD)
Turkey, February 17, 2007
Remark
Photographer
TC-*** As a part of a special memorial flight project of Turkish Air Force (TAF) named “Golden Wings”, only 2 AK-1 aircrafts were produced in TAF 2nd Air Maintenance Center. The project was based on the story of 2 Turkish pilots; Capt. Fethi and Capt. Sadik, who have passed away in the plane crash during their flight from Istanbul to Cairo by a Bleriot XI in 1914. AK-1 aircrafts reached to Cairo using the Bleriot XI’s similar historic route in 2001. Now, the “Fethi” is preserved in the TAF Museum.

NL51PT / 472145/HO-M (cn 122-38604) True story: Petie 3rd. came about because of a new man, his first day on the flight line, backed Petie 2nd. into some drop tanks damaging the elevator. The poor guy was hysterical for damaging the Squadron Commander's plane. Jim Bleidner, one of Lt.Col. John C. Meyer's ground crew, told him to calm down and go get a new plane from the depot and he would tell Meyer his old plane was in for maintenance. The new plane, Petie 3rd. Bleidner saved his bacon! Remark
Photographer
A20-502 / BF-O/502 (cn 712) Displayed and signed in the Ballarat Aviation Museum as A20-502, complete with 'combat history', this aircraft is really A20-511 with a much more prosaic life story. Brought on RAAF charge on 22 January 1942, it was allocated to 5 Squadron, but passed on to 5 SFTS prior to the former unit moving overseas. Eventually allocated to CFS at East Sale as an instructional airframe, 1956-59. Disposed of an stripped for parts at West Sale - remains recovered in January 1962. Restored at Moorabbin until 1970.

C-GITS / 102 (cn 271) This aircraft is a special one and I have to tell you my personal story when I entered the flightdeck! I wanted to find out if there where any entries in the Technical Logbook or other failures which occured during flight and so I asked the Captain to find out. He, with a smile in his face, immediately started to fondly caressing the panel above the autopilot and replied "Are you kidding? She´s our sailplane, she´s a good girl!"

CP-1319 (cn 22428) An incredible, but typical Bolivian meat-haulin' story here. In 2009 she's still working hard flying goods across the Andes. They don't make 'em like they used to!!

Lockheed (E)P-3B Orion
Keflavik (KEF / BIKF)
Iceland, April 8, 1980
Remark
Photographer
160291 / RC-9 Further photos in the story of the VPU-1 Orions. This one was more peculiar in many ways than the others that had been here before it. It was marked as a P-3C. In fact as the second Update II model. That aircraft was with VX-1 at the time and was photographed in England in August as JA-1 and is on AN as photo 1251741. Probably one of the reasons it was painted up to resemble the resident squadron, VP-46 with the tail code RC, was that it was kept on station at Keflavik for about two weeks, so the powers that be did not want it to stand out too much. More text with the next 160291 photo.

V8-BKH (cn 046) Very very rare and exotic aircraft today in MUC ! Story behind this picture: V8-BKH was in MUC since early february. There were various rumours about its departure. On Monday 8th it was announced to make a test-flight on Tuesday 9th. I decided to take a day off from work and stay the whole day at the airport. I waited at the southern runway. At around 3pm V8-BKH started taxiing towards the northern rwy. I grabbed my car, broke some speed limits and here is finally the result... :-)

Remark
Photographer
162708 / AF-101 (cn 554) Looks like a typical well-groomed Tomcat on final approach, but what a story behind this one! Performing a fly-by in full afterburner after an air show in Kentucky, the crew only then discovered they had failed to retract the landing gear. They elected to fly on to Dobbins/NAS Atlanta for the repair facilities they knew were required. There followed an emergency landing and trap, then 3 months in the shop. This was the end of the second (and final) functional check flight. VF-201 Hunters Block 140.

163278 / AD-632 (cn 3N-1) In 1987/88 the Navy took delivery of 26 F-16's, including 4 two-seaters designated TF-16N. A brand new "family model" is seen here on the NAS Atlanta transit line during momentary sunshine, showing off the markings of VF-45 Blackbirds (Key West, FL). By the mid-1990's, the airframes were judged to have suffered from accelerated fatigue and were all phased out. The embargoed Pakistan Falcons were delivered in their place a few years later, but that's another story.

Remark
Photographer
152899 / NK At first glance, this Intruder is strangely marked with the familiar Tactical Paint Scheme Ghost Grays overall but a white nose radome and rudder plus all markings in color. Actually, this was a "movie star" of sorts as it was one of several aircraft belonging to VA-165 Boomers that were cosmetically altered to resemble Intruders of the Vietnam War (VA-196 Main Battery) for Flight of the Intruder. The name below the canopy is none other than Lt. Jake Grafton (Cool Hand), the story's central character.

USA - Florida, February 24, 2012
Remark
Photographer
AV-030 From an unusual vantage point, an Atlas 5 rocket and the 200th Centaur upper stage lifts off from Cape Canaveral's oceanside Pad 41 with MUOS-1, a US Navy communications satellite and the heaviest Atlas payoad in history at over 15,000 lbs. The rocket flew in its biggest configuration ever, standing 21 stories tall and strapped with five solid rocket boosters. In this view from about 300 feet up and 1800 feet away stop the Atlas' assembly tower, the 206-foot vehicle begins to arc downrange.

N630AA (cn 24588/316) One Word: WOW! Another Word: LOW! Story of the Photo: Marseno Says - "Hey Renato, Stop the Car!! You ain't done yet, there is a 757 comming". I then hit the breaks, got off the car, caused a major traffic jam, took the photo and ran to the airport. This was the last photo from my vacation at Paradise. Ironically, maybe the most fantastic one with such a very low approach. I dedicate this photo to my wife, Marseno, Fred and Dekker.

N649AS (cn 30663/1386) Wow! Northern lights and the Great Dipper!! This could be one of the ultimate window views that I could expect. Mother Nature surely does know how to pose for photographs. However, this is changing forever and could disappear suddenly as we are now traveling more than 700 km/h with 10 km off the ground. Definitely, this is a damn difficult image to capture where my passion for photography comes from. The red cast on the wing comes from the anti-collision light as I managed to synchronize my photo with it.

Flying in the mountains gave me a ton of photo oppertunities. This is possibly the coolest, located at the top of a mountain near Asheville the airport elevation is 4,400 feet and the tallest part of the mountain was 6,000 feet. You need permission to land there but it looks like there is a nice resort and golf course next to it. Notice the vibrant colours of the leaves as they start to turn.

This was a spectacular storm and I only went out to shoot pictures after about 30 minutes of nearly continuous lightening. Really a treat to watch, but not very conducive to a smooth operation. If anyone wonders why the ramp closes when lightening is in the area this should be explanation enough. This strike was just outside the perimeter fence but this storm produced hundreds of strikes within the fence, according to the detector equip.

CS-TKN (cn 624) This month of November had been really good for us spotters, with so many different things coming by!! Not being a different A/C, this one deserved some attention... These pilots were caught in some wind shear, and it was really close to total disaster, since the wing almost touched the ground! You can also see the stress in main landing gear... At that time, there were gusts up to 44 knots of crosswind, and heavy turbulence was reported! I'm glad that everything ended up well.. [Canon 40D + Sigma 120-400

This bird flew in military camouflage colors earlier this year and from the side, you could still see green stains on the tail. My first and probably last flight on an IL-76, it was amazing! Probably the rarest aircraft to fly on. We were sitting on foldable seat on the side, with no outside view. It got interesting as we approached Pyongyang again, since we couldn't see when we would touch down. But surely enough, we heard the engine go idle and had a beautiful landing.

Jiuzhaigou - Huanglong (JZH / ZUJZ)
China, August 20, 2013
Remark
Photographer
With an elevation of 3,448 m (11,312 ft), Huanglong airport is one of the highest in China and even the world. It's a key entrance to Sichuan Province's Jiuzhaigou Natural Reserve and Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, 2 most popular natural attractions in China. But due to the fast changeable weather (low cloud, turbulence, etc.), it's also a challenging destination for pilots, as said "for any 10 flights to Huanglong, 9 have been cancelled, and the rest one is returning on the mid-way".

The concept if this aircraft with its high visibility was to enable a cheaper alternative to helicopter operations for Police and Traffic monitoring. This aircraft was restored in 2008 and is now the only airworthy example in the European region. It is hoped that interest is reignited in the aircraft and orders will once again be placed.

ZS-SIN (cn 21802/670) We had just exited the Kruger park and were on our way to Sabie to spend the night there. Our route would take us past Nelspruit and I couldn't resist to visit the airport. It's a very nice terminal and there were a few Cessna's present on the main apron, but the maintenance/graveyard area in a remote corner of the airport looked more interesting. We found a road that led to that place and the first thing we discovered was this Boeing 737-200, which is parked outside of the fence!

128911 (cn 281) It is hard to put into words the wonderful time I had at the National Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola. I wish that I had been able to schedule an extra day in order to visit without my camera to enjoy and learn from all the superb exhibits and multimedia displays. The Sioux is probably most familiar to me as the H-13 from TV's M*A*S*H fitted with stretcher carriers. Learning all about the type's Navy service would have been interesting but there was just no time.

WD321 (cn C1/0258) Built in 1948 the aircraft was operated at Boscombe Down by the Empire Test Pilot School and as a glider tug. It became G-BDCC fitted with a Lycoming engine and used as a tug at the gliding club at Husbands Bosworth until it was severely damaged in 1999. It is being rebuilt as part of the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, an interesting museum which only opened in July 2012

Alenia MC-27J Spartan
Paris - Le Bourget (LBG / LFPB)
France, June 19, 2013
Remark
Photographer
N359PL (cn 4126) Paris Air Show. Definitely a non-standard optional extra! Marketed as the MC-27J, this aircraft is billed as a true multimission machine, and is equipped with a new palletised loading system that allows for quick mission changes (as low as one hour). As displayed, the aircraft was configured for the gunship role, mounting this single GAU-23 Bushmaster 30 mm cannon on a removable sliding pallet. Interestingly, the entire system is self-contained and even includes its own independent power source.

JA8960 (cn 25643/972) The power visible only in the rain. Sunny weather is the best thing for outdoor photographers, but there is something interesting that can be visible only in the rain. ANA244 from Fukuoka kicks up lots of water on Haneda's R/W34L on its full reverse. [Nikon D700, SIGMA 120-400mm F4.5-5.6]

North American Rockwell OV-10A Bronco
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 15, 1990
Remark
Photographer
68-3814 / SR (cn 321-140) "Clear and a million" is what aviators would call this kind of day, and it was almost essential to obtain decent photos of a/c in the Europe 1 finish. This Bronco from the 21st Tactical Air Support Sqn., Shaw AFB, SC, appears to be recently painted and presents a pleasant appearance for dark camo. The name Raven carries a lot of history, going back to the Forward Air Controllers in the secret war in Laos. Interesting that the USAF still had Broncos assigned to this mission right up to Desert Storm!!

Grumman KA-6D Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, December 1987
Remark
Photographer
151570 / AE-517 (cn I-52) The sun was just beginning to appear against a dark overcast when I snapped this shot of visiting A-6 tanker. It carries a transitional color scheme that includes full color insignia and low-viz markings; it was assigned to Attack Sqn. 176 Thunderbolts from NAS Oceana, VA. In the interest of increased visibility for air wing tankers, KA-6Ds soon carried hi-viz colors, markings, and unit insignia.
