Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R1 (801)
Doncaster (EGCI) (closed)
UK - England, October 2003
Remark
Photographer
XW666 (cn 8041) Previously displayed at Long Marston, Nimrod R.1 XW666 nose had moved to Aeroventure (the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum) at Doncaster when I visited in October 2003 and made a spectacular "entrance guard" to the museum. On the 16th May 1995 during a test flight there was a catastrophic fire resulting from a starter motor exploding and the crew had to ditch the Nimrod in the Moray Firth before the main spar failed. Thankfully all the crew escaped with their lives.
