We had to follow the An-12 that is still on the runway, through the Kabul valley. Not too hard since she left a huge smoke trail for us to follow. Ahead of the runway are the suburbs of Kabul, the huge hills and beyond those you can clearly see the icy peaks of the HinduKush mountains (19.000ft ASL). Imagine the performance calculations needed for a heavy departure! What a view. |

What a treat it was to get a perfectly clear overview of the airport I spotted at the previous day! Normal traffic direction is Runway 25 (right to left). Landing traffic need to navigate the narrow valley corridor, seen on the right. Departing traffic requires a tight left turnout immediately after departure due to mountains seen at left. The small town at left is Gypsum. This is my 5000th photo on a.net. |
