Rare Bear is a Grumman F8F-2 built by Lyle Shelton from a collection of parts and powered by a Wright R-3350 (instead of the usual P&W R-2800 found in Bearcats). This aircraft has won the Unlimited Gold Race at Reno twelve times. |

N57LR (cn 87-1002) "Miss Ashley II" in the pits at the 1997 Reno Air Races. Bill Rogers built this Unlimited class racer by combining the fuselage of a P-51 Mustang (built from plans obtained from NASM) with the wings and horizontal tail of a Learjet. The aircraft was powered by a Rolls Royce Griffon with counter rotating propellers, taken from an Avro Shackleton patrol bomber. Miss Ashley II was destroyed in a crash at the Reno Air Races in 1999 and its pilot Gary Levitz was killed. |

NX4434P / 15 (cn 41H/636336) The Unlimited Class racer "Furias" at the 1997 Reno Air Races. This aircraft started life as WH589, a Sea Fury built for the Royal Australian Navy. Lloyd Hamilton rebuilt it and reengined it with a P&W R-4360. This aircraft is now raced at Reno by Bill Rogers and Dale Stolzer. |
