NL93012 / 231909/OR-R/A (cn 32216) I've been guilty of taking such a sight of WWII aircraft for granted. Collings Foundation crewmembers are at work early to prepare for the day's activity. |

NL93012 / 231909/OR-R/A (cn 32216) This B-17 was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, CA in 1945 and delivered to the USAAF as “44-83575”, but was to late to see combat in WWII. In 1952 the B-17 was subjected to 3 nuclear explosions in Nevada. After a 13 year “cool down” period the B-17 was sold as scrap, but was later restored to flying condition. After being used as a water bomber for 20 years the aircraft was sold to the Collings Foundation and the B-17 was restored to its WWII configuration. (Canon 40D + 100-400 L IS) |
