Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International (FLL / KFLL)
USA - Florida, September 3, 2010
Remark
Photographer
N817NA (cn 46082/458) NASA817 rockets out of FLL to chase down Hurricane Earl. The special sensors for data collection are mounted on the roof as can be prominently seen. This gives away the presence of some very high tech scientific equipment in the cabin. The Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment is a NASA Earth science field experiment in 2010 that is being conducted to better understand how tropical storms form and develop into major hurricanes.

N817NA (cn 46082/458) The CFM56 Series engines #1 and #2 on the NASA The Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment aircraft. She is being readied for a flight into the eye of Hurricane Earl which is currently churning in the Atlantic Ocean and heading towards landfall somewhere along the east coast of the US. You can notice some of the instrument probes for atmospheric sampling in the windows of the aircraft.

You can notice some of the instrument probes for atmospheric sampling on the top of the fuselage and on the underwing surface. You would think that penetrating the hurricane eye wall at 33,000 feet would clean all the windows like a car wash!

N817NA (cn 46082/458) The cockpit of a very special bird. The NASA flight crew is preflighting the aircraft for a 6 hour mission INTO the eye of Cat 4 hurricane Earl. It was sobering when the audible alarms for such things as "ALERT- GROUND WARNING" was heard as part of the test. The Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment is a NASA Earth science field experiment in 2010 that is being conducted to better understand how tropical storms form and develop into major hurricanes.
