OV-103 (cn OV-103) From the roof of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, "Discovery" begins her journey into space after launch on the STS-128 mission. Liftoff from Launch Pad 39A was on time at 11:59 p.m. EDT. The 1st launch attempt on 08/24 was postponed due to weather conditions. The 2nd attempt on 08/25 was postponed due to a valve in Discovery's main propulsion system. The huge clouds being generated are due to water from the noise suppression system being turned into instant vapor due to heat. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" departs Launch Compex 39A at 1943H EDT on STS-119 to the International Space Station. It delivered and assembled the fourth starboard Integrated Truss Segment (S6), and the fourth set of solar arrays and batteries to the station. Misssion duration was 12 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes, 33 seconds. Here is the first few seconds as she clears the lightning rod and starts her acceleration to reach escape velocity. The clouds are caused by water used in the noise suppression system. [Canon 1Ds MkII F/4 600mmX2x;1/640;ISO125] |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" returns to Earth after the STS-119 mission to the ISS. Discovery’s main landing gear touched down at 15:13:17 EDT, followed by the nose gear at 15:13:40 EDT. The shuttle’s wheels stopped at 15:14:45 EDT, bringing the mission’s elapsed time to 12 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes, 33 seconds. Discovery traveled 5,304,140 miles during its journey. This sight and sound of the two sonic booms that herald the immenient arrival of the orbiter will soon be history. She may have as little as 2 more flights! |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" sits on Pad 39B with the crew in their seats. The crew access arm begins to swing away from the orbiter and we are minutes away from the launch of STS-119 to the ISS. The orbiter is illuminated by the Xenon lights however the Sun has dipped beneath the horizon and I am 4 miles south of the pad. The fireworks are about to begin! OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" launches on STS-124 for a 13 days, 18 hrs, 13 minutes 7 seconds duration mission spanning 5,735,643 miles. Here she is halfway through the roll manuever which flips the orbiter on her back for the ride into Space. This reduces stress and allows the pilots a ground reference because they can see the Earth hence easier in case of an abort. The cargo today is the Japanese module Kibo & Remote Manipulator System. |

The technicians (seen here) walk besides the tracked behemouth which is travelling at .9MPH along the 3.4 mile track from the VAB to L-39A. Once at the pad, the MLP stands on its legs while the crawler retreats to safety. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) "Discovery" on STS-120 to the ISS. Launch time 11:38 a.m. EDT. Approx. T + 00:10 and the NASA Space Shuttle System is accelerating through 797 feet at 992 MPH. The white things falling in the exhaust plume and one floating above the cockpit are disposable cardboard covers of the RCS system. I am using a Canon 1Ds MKII with a 600mm F/4 L IS and a 2X multiplier from a location approx. 5,535 meters from L-39A. |
