ZZ173 (cn P-77/UK-3) The serial numbers for the RAF’s C-17 fleet were awarded out-of-sequence so that they would reflect the order in which they were delivered — the third of the four original RAF C-17s (ZZ173) is seen here during a protracted pre-flight check before departure from its home base. The RAF C-17 fleet is now to be augmented in Europe by a NATO fleet to be based in Hungary. |

ZZ173 (cn P-77/UK-3) Disturbing the remnants of the previous days' snow as it lifts off runway 33 after a characteristically short roll. These aircarft are still regular visitors to Birmingham, bringing in injured servicemen and then, as here, positioning out to their base at RAF Brize Norton. |

ZZ173 (cn P-77/UK-3) Made some touch and gos with some very nice and low approaches here at RAF Brize Norton. You can also see the red blinking traffic lights stopping the cars during these low landings. Canon 350D |

ZZ173 (cn P-77/UK-3) This 99 Squadron aircraft was the third of the original four leased RAF C-17s and was delivered on 4 August 2001. The RAF has decided to buy the aircraft on expiry of the lease in 2008, and to purchase another, bringing the fleet to five. The C-17 blurs the distinction between strategic and tactical transport, with a 4,500-mile range combined with the ability to land on semi-prepared strips of only 3,500ft length.
