Supermarine 349 Spitfire LF5C
Old Warden - Biggleswade
UK - England, July 3, 2005
Remark
Photographer
G-AWII / AR501/NN-A (cn WASP/20/223) Originally a clipped wing variant, restored to flying condition for the film "The Battle of Britain." It is the only Spitfire in the world still flying with an original de Havilland three-blade propeller. Over the winter of 2000/2001, AR501 was repainted and elliptical wingtips were refitted, returning the aircraft to the condition in which it was delivered to 310 Squadron.

Remark
Photographer
G-AWII / AR501/NN-A (cn WASP/20/223) The first Supermarine Spitfire flew on 5 March 1936. It was designed by Reginald Mitchell, who had earlier designed the successful Supermarine S.6 seaplane that won the Schneider Trophy. The first Spitfires entered service in July 1938, equipping No. 19 squadron. By the outbreak of war nine squadrons were equipped with Spitfires. The Spitfire was always the more glamorous aircraft during the Battle of Britain, but the Hawker Hurricane was also used to great effect during 1940 equipping 18 squadrons.
