60-0051 / MT (cn 464416) Cockpit of a special B-52. Flying into Houston which is the Mission Control for NASA and the home base for the astronauts, this aircraft from the 307th Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, Lousiana, flew special "Return to Human Spaceflight/Failure is not an Option" nose art designed by B-52 crew member Captain Kerry Baker. Also, the names of Astronaut Neil Armstrong and Flight Director Gene Kranz was painted on the window rails. Thank you Col. Jones, Capt. Baker and crew for supporting human spaceflight. |

61-0014 / MT (cn 464441) This B-52 entered service in 1961, a year before the Cuba Missile Crisis. At that time B-52s operated round the clock on QRA and spent lengthy detachments (TDYs) in the UK – Fairford, Brize Norton, Upper Heyford and Greenham Common were all USAF bases at that time. This may well have been one of those that woke me up at night as a small child living near the end of the Brize runway. Half a century later, it is seen here arriving for RIAT. It is from 23 Bomb Sqn, 5 Bomb Wing, Minot, North Dakota. |
