9Q-CUI (cn U20606373) Thanks to the pilot for the flight to Epulu and the Okapi reserve there, and for staying out of this shot! MAF Congo is a non-profit, faith-based humanitarian organization that has assisted in the evacuation of many missionaries and locals in the extended conflict in Congo. Thankfully things have calmed down quite a bit in the area. |

ER-AJC (cn 1AJ003-07) The RVA ('Airport' Authorities) of Shabunda are not too happy with photographers. It was a quick shot and I discovered later that a part of the tail was missing.. The plane had TEP-titles written on it and still wore its Moldavian registration. The operator at the time the pic is taken is unknown, but it is likely this one is based at Bukavu, the capital of the province. |

3C-AAL (cn 347003) Sneaky taken through the cockpit window of TMKs Twin Otter 9Q-CEL. The c/n is slightly visible on the tailroot. As in the case of many other Antonovs, the crew came with it from the former Soviet Union to earn some money in Africa. |

9Q-CUB (cn 790325) Seven or eight L410s are based at Goma, like this Uniform Bravo. The type appears to be very useful for Congolese airstrips. The airport authorities -RVA- were so kind to take me in a jeep and drive along the flightline. This one is made during that ride. |

9Q-CXZ (cn 841201) 'Anyone a mandazi?' the boy on the left asks the mechanics (mandazi=doughnut-like fried bread). The guys are tired, they have have been testing the engines of the plane the whole afternoon. A week before 9Q-CBQ of the same airline crashed at the airstrip of Walikale, during an emergency landing after an engine failure. The black in the back is petrified lava, not tarmac. |

When you fly from Butembo to Goma (North-Kivu), you fly along Nyiragongo, an active vulcano at about 18 kms from Goma's city centre. The next thing you see is the airport. The black rocks once were lava that ran over the runway and destroyed the city's centre. In the background Lake Kivu and the hills of Rwanda. |
