North American P-82B Twin Mustang
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
44-65162 / FQ-357 (cn 123-43748) Although named a 'Mustang' the F-82 has only a superficial stretched resemblance to a P-51 Mustang as it was, in fact, a totally new design and the last prop fighter to be ordered in numbers by the USAF. This F-82 on display at the National Museum of the USAF was built as a B-model but has been modified to a G- and painted as the aircraft flown by Lts. Charles Moran, pilot, and Fred Larkins, radar observer, 68th F(AW)S, when they shot down a North Korean La-7 on 27th June 1950 over Kimpo AB.

Douglas A-26A Counter-Invader (B-26/JD)
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
64-17676 (cn 7309) The Counter Invader was a highly modified version of the Douglas A-26 Invader, a World War II attack bomber with a rebuilt fuselage and tail, strengthened wings, improved engines, reversible propellers, wing-tip fuel tanks and other refinements..

Boeing YC-14A
Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (Municipal) (DMA / KDMA)
USA - Arizona, March 18, 2014
Remark
Photographer
72-1874 (cn P2) This was Boeing's entrant into the USAF's Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST) competition that aimed to replace the C-130 Hercules as the USAF's tactical transport aircraft. Although all specifications were met this plane never made it into production and the USAF eventually decided to go with an updated C-130 and a larger transport (hence the C-17).

Sikorsky YH-5A (S-48)
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2014
Remark
Photographer
43-46620 I find it really fascinating to see these old helicopters/aeroplanes and to understand how the types in service today have evolved from them. The boom in helicopter development is particularly interesting as the rapid advances post-WWII quickly opened up possibilities that couldn't be contemplated previously. The improved capabilities of the H-5 became extremely useful during the Korean War for the rescue timely rescue of downed pilots and for Medivac missions.

De Havilland Canada U-6A Beaver (DHC-2)
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
51-16501 (cn 277) It is no exageration to say that the modest and unassuming DHC-2 is one aircraft type that deserves to be labelled as 'great'. The USAF flew more than 200 of the military U-6 variant for Medivac, courier service, passenger transport, light cargo, reconnaissance, rescue and aerial photography missions, the type even saw service in both the Korean and Southeast Asia Wars. This example is now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

LTV A-7D Corsair II
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
70-0970 / MB (cn D-116) This A-7 was flown on 18th Nov. 1972 by Maj. Colin A. Clarke on a nine-hour rescue support mission in SE Asia for which he received the Air Force Cross. This aircraft arrived at the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1992. The Skywarrior in the background is one of the few regrets about my visit to NMUSAF as I just couldn't get a shot of it that I was happy with.

Rockwell B-1B Lancer
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
84-0051 / DY (cn 11) It was such a thrill to walk amongst all these magnificent, iconic aeroplanes and the mightily impressive B-1 is right up at the top of the list. This Bone served previously with the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess and is a Operation Desert Fox combat veteran but was retired to the museum during Sept. 2002.

Beech QU-22B (1079)
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
69-7699 (cn EB-7) The QU-22B was to be an unmanned airborne relay for the Igloo White operation during the Southeast Asia War. Igloo White placed and monitored sensors to detect traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Due to equipment reliability problems all operational flights carried a pilot and the system worked well but, due to the loss of several aircraft, the QU-22 program was cancelled in 1972 and this aircraft went on display at the National Museum of the USAF in 2002.

North American T-6D Mosquito
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
42-84216 / TA-216 (cn 88-15997) The T-6 made its name as a trainer but was rapidly pressed into service at the start of the Korean War in the role of a forward air controller (FAC). The FAC T-6D 'Mosquito' version performed well but was retired by the USAF as single props were thought to be unsuitable for these missions in the jet-age, a decision that was quickly reversed in Vietnam. This Mosquito flew with the 6147th Tactical Air Control Group in the Korean War and was eventually acquired by the National Museum of the USAF in 1995.

Lockheed C-60A Lodestar (L-18)
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
43-16445 (cn 18-2605) The C-60 was the most numerous of the Lodestar variants operated by the USAF. This example was TOC by the USAAF in 1943 but went to the French post-war and served in Algiers as F-BAMA. It returned to the US around the mid-fifties and flew with various private owners (last reg. as XA-SEX) before arriving at the National Museum of the USAF for preservation and display.

McDonnell Douglas YC-17A Globemaster III
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2013
Remark
Photographer
87-0025 / ED (cn F-2/T-1) This is the prototype C-17 and made her first flight on 15th Sept. 1991 flying from Long Beach to Edwards AFB, CA. After completing the test program for the Globemaster III she then became a testbed for the USAF, NASA and other flight-test agencies, as well as finding time to appear in quite a few blockbuster movies. She was retired at Edwards during 2011 and flown the following year to the National Museum of the USAF for display.

Northrop Grumman B-2A Spirit
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 18, 2014
Remark
Photographer
82-1070 / WM This is not the original 82-1070 'Spirit of Ohio', rather one of two additional aircraft Northrop constructed without engines or instruments for fatigue testing. This example was used for stress testing on the airframe (it was discovered that the wings could withstand 161% of the design specs stress load before cracking) before being retired to the National Museum of the USAF for display.
