160046 (cn 47684/786) There's not better way to start the day than with the sight & sound of a classic Diesel-9! One of the very few DC-9s remaining in any sort of service, 160046 is seen rumbling out of Zagreb, bound for the States. A military transport version of the civilian DC-9-32, the C-9B mod includes the provision of a large cargo door, as well as additional fuel tanks that - with a few payload restrictions - give it an intercontinental range of nearly 4,500 km. |

4O-HCC (cn 5712) Unmarked, but still easily identifiable, this Montenegrin Two Twelve is seen hover taxiing to the GA apron for a refueling stop. Previously operated by the Yugoslav Police, a number of Two Twelves were adopted by Yugoslavia's successor states during the 90s civil war, remaining in law enforcement usage to this day. 4O-HCC - formerly likely known as YU-HCC - is itself a close relation to the Croatian Police's own 212, 9A-HBM (ex YU-HBM). |

D-EKEW (cn 01) The thing that made the whole 18 hour return trip to Aero 2013 worth it: the fascinating Extra 500. The brainchild of the same team responsible for the Extra 200 and 300 series, the Rolls-Royce 250B-powered 500 was developed from the earlier piston-engined model 400, a six-seat pressurized tourer designed to take on the established Piper Malibu line. Oddly beautiful and very advanced aircraft, the 400 and 500 had been produced only in limited numbers, making them a very rare sight. |

I-PBRB (cn 191) Quite an eye-catching (and expensive!) crowd, not often seen at Pleso outside the summer tourist season. Completely dominating the GA ramp, this pristine Falcon was joined this day by Learjet 60XR OE-GCS and a rare Falcon 50 N8400E, the last of the proper "tri-holers". |

I-TOPD (cn RK-163) Born as a Mitsubishi, bought by Beech, re-branded into a Hawker and finally sold by Raytheon - and on top of that, it looks like a pocket-sized DC-9. Sporting one of the more complicated family trees among business aircraft, the pudgy Beechjet was sadly confined to the history books during Hawker Beechcraft's reorganization in late 2012. |

9A-DLA (cn 974) Very much out of its element here on the continent - a hundred kilometers from the nearest sea - DLA is just one of the remains of several failed attempts to launch regular inter-island services on the Croatian coast. Making up the bulk of the ECA fleet - together with a Canadian-registered Grumman Goose stored even further inland - DLA has been a regular fixture at Pleso for several years now. But, despite never actually flying, it appears to be regularly maintained... |

RA-11025 (cn 6344103) Looking like it had just rolled off the production line, RA-11025 was certainly the biggest catch of the day. A very rare type in this part of Europe, this machine had spend a few days in town, apparently on a break from its busy flight schedule around Europe (as shown by photos in the A.net database). |

9A-BOL (cn 17269410) Vee One... Rotate! The aftermath of yesterday's heavy snows seen on an ironically beautiful, crisp and calm winter's day. The weight of almost 40 cm of snow, pushing down on the horizontal stabilizer's long moment arm, had meant that virtually all of our little birds had ended up on their tails overnight... |

D-ICEC (cn F337-0027/01337) Yesterday's snows had also added insult to injury for our resident derelict as well. Having struck the ground with its nose while landing a decade or so back, this poor Skymaster now ended up striking it with its tail as well... |

08-03775 (cn M-3775) "Crazy 22" preparing to swing round and head back towards the apron after a late afernoon rappelling exercise. Part of a four-strong US helicopter presence - including sister ship 07-03774 and two Navy MH-60S Knighthawks - 08-03775 was in town to participate in the Jackal Stone 12 NATO exercise. |

121 (cn 75021145) The MiG-21 - now in easy-to-assemble kit form! Like on virtually all 1st through 3rd generation single engine fighters, getting at the powerplant on the -21 meant disassembling half the aircraft. The heart of this system is a compact Tumansky R-25 turbojet, normally developing a reheated 69,6 kN of thrust, but with up to 97 kN available for short periods at low level. Right behind it is the reheat system, that - in combination with the variable propelling nozzle and intake - completes the powerplant. |

9A-DDM (cn T310-0929) One of the few snub-nosed 310 still flying in the region, 9A-DDM appears to be a permanent resident of Portoroz despite the Croatian reg. Looking crisp after last night's showers, the aircraft shows no trace of its wheels-up landing at Cepin airfield (LDOC) on 12 June 2009. |

9A-HBM (cn 5569) Welcome to Bell country! The four-strong police fleet tucked neatly away in its warm and dry hangar. Out beyond HBM are 9A-HBZ and 9A-HDB - both JetRanger IIIs - while bringing up the rear is JetRanger II 9A-HBC, the second oldest operational helicopter in the country. |

C-FTNB (cn 57002) The eighth foreign helicopter - and the second GlobalRanger - to visit Lucko this year, C-FTNB is seen warm and dry in the police squadron hangar as a downpour rages outside. Fitted out with a full HEMS interior, this helicopter was in town for an official presentation to Police, Air Force and Mountain Rescue officials as a possible replacement for the country's (non-EASA compliant) Mi-171 fleet in EMS and SAR roles. |

VH-EZS (cn GA8-TC-320-12-78) The proper way to run a demonstration flight! Cruising above the cloud deck at 3,000 ft near Varazdin airfield (LDVA), in the company of DA-20A-1 9A-DAK (flying almost flat out to keep up with us). Common to continental Croatia during autumn and winter, the weather situation is often dominated by broken or overcast stratus, making for some fantastic views on top. |
