Croatia - Police
Agusta AB-212
Zagreb - Lucko (LDZL)
Croatia, June 5, 2013
Remark
Photographer
9A-HBM (cn 5569) Lifting off for another special forces rappelling mission to the background of that timeless Huey rattle. Always the workhorse of the fleet, this incredibly charismatic machine has been in law enforcement ever since its entry into service in 1978. Originally flying with the Yugoslav Police as YU-HBM, it would later form the backbone of the nascent Croatian Police Air Wing - and would, true to the legacy of its famous ancestor, fly CASEVAC missions throughout the 90s civil war.

Untitled
UTVA Aero-3
Zagreb - Lucko (LDZL)
Croatia, March 29, 2014
Remark
Photographer
YU-CPC (cn 40154) Normally hidden away behind several rows of gliders, YU-CPC finally gets to enjoy some daylight during a spring hangar cleaning session. One of the few remaining examples of the type, this machine had actually undergone restoration several years back - a process that had, sadly, been curtailed due to a lack of funds. Planned on being returned all the way to flying status, the aircraft had also received a Croatian registration (9A-XPC), which had never been used outside the offical register...

Zagreb - Lucko (LDZL)
Croatia, March 30, 2014
Remark
Photographer
9A-GOD (cn 344) A contrast that perhaps best of all explains why I love Lucko: we've got everything from gliders to transport helicopters, fun to security - and dull grayness to cheerful colors.

Cessna 650 Citation VI
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, March 9, 2014
Remark
Photographer
PH-MFX (cn 650-0240) A formerly more colorful bird is seen taxiing by for a properly loud departure down RWY 05. One of the rarest bizjets around, the Citation VI was developed as a cheaper, softer version of the basic Citation III, Cessna's first swept-wing model. Intended to offer solid performance and comfort to the lower end of the market, the VI would eventually become the first Citation flop, with only 39 examples sold before Cessna pulled its plug back in 1995.

Croatia - Air Force
Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21bisD
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, February 25, 2014
Remark
Photographer
121 Looking worse for wear every time I snap it, 121 is seen rolling briskly towards RWY 05 for a one-hour training flight as "Knight 01". Even though it is part of the QRA pair, on this occasion it was flying unarmed, but with the AA-8 pylons still in place. One of the last Croatian AF MiG-21s still flying, it is holding down the fort pending the arrival of a batch of new and overhauled examples from the Ukraine.

McDonnell Douglas MD-82 (DC-9-82)
Maribor - Edvard Rusjan (Slivnica) (MBX / LJMB)
Slovenia, February 14, 2014
Remark
Photographer
S5-ACC (cn 48095/1055) Probably one of the most famous cockpit layouts in the history of aviation. Displayed in immaculate condition at Maribor since 2010, this machine has quite a history, first flying in January 1982 and serving as N940PS (PSA), N815US (USAir), 9A-CDB (Air Adriatic, Croatia), ZA-ARB (Belle Air, Albania) and finally S5-ACC (Aurora Airlines, Slovenia). Originally produced as an MD-81, it was converted to the MD-82 standard sometime in the mid 80s, and later fitted with the Quiet Eagle Stage IV hush kit.

Motor Sich
Antonov An-74TK-200
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, February 7, 2014
Remark
Photographer
UR-74026 (cn 36547096919) It's only the beginning of February and already we have a highlight at Pleso. One of Antonov's most unusual transports, the An-74 is an upgraded, Arctic-capable version of the An-72, both of which owe their unusual looks (and engine locations) to the application of the "Coandă effect". Originally designed as pure military transports, over time they had evolved into several passenger models, the first of which was the An-74TK-200. The design has also later served as the base for the An-148 and 158.

Cessna 172N Skyhawk 100 II
In Flight
Croatia, November 27, 2012
Remark
Photographer
9A-DMG (cn 17272625) The joys of night flying... the cockpit all lit up, quiet on the frequency, the reassuring rumble of the Lycoming O-320 up front - and utter blackness outside. About to finally join our intended route after flying a long instrument departure procedure from Zagreb (LDZA).

Cessna 150M
In Flight
Slovenia, January 2014
Remark
Photographer
9A-DEY (cn 150-78573) A large stratus, beautiful sunshine, a light aircraft and a camera - what more does one need to be happy (except a pair of gloves)? Skirting the very edge of an extensive sheet of stratus that - despite appearances - was at most 100 feet deep.

Cessna 172N Skyhawk 100 II
In Flight
Croatia, October 2012
Remark
Photographer
9A-DMG (cn 17272625) Having become bored of the opressive grayness on the ground - with a seemingly endless low stratus blanketing northern Croatia for weeks - I'd decided I might as well check on conditions higher up... definitely wasn't disappointed!

Croatia - Air Force
Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21bisD
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, December 12, 2013
Remark
Photographer
121 Weathered and tired - but still infinitely charismatic - 121 is seen quietly sitting around in the background of the Croatian AF's 22nd anniversary celebration. Sadly, this is one of the last times we'll be able to enjoy the good old camo scheme, with the fleet being progressively repainted into a customized NATO-standard air superiority grey pattern.

Croatia - Police
Eurocopter EC-135P-2+
Zagreb - Lucko (LDZL)
Croatia, November 28, 2013
Remark
Photographer
9A-HBB (cn 0725) The second EC-135 for the Croatian Police cooling down after its delivery flight in the company of its stablemate 9A-HBA (delivered a month earlier). Flying under the temporary reg EC-030 during delivery, this machine was (like HBA) manufactured in 2008 - and had initially been ordered by Spain's Guardia Civil (as HU.26-14), but never taken up and stored for five years until its sale to Croatia.

Antonov An-225 Mriya
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, November 9, 2013
Remark
Photographer
UR-82060 (cn 19530503763) An aquamarine panel and six throttle levers - no prizes for guessing the aircraft! Day 2 of the Mriya's visit to Zagreb had been spent loading the 140 ton electrical transformer intended for the Philippines - a process going on just a few meters below me. Many thanks to Tamas M., Petar M. and Capt Dmitry Antonov for the opportunity to tour this fantastic machine!

Eurocopter EC-135P-2+
Zagreb - Lucko (LDZL)
Croatia, November 17, 2013
Remark
Photographer
9A-HBA (cn 0689) The old and the new as the sole Police EC-135 taxis out past 9A-HDB, one of the service's three JetRangers. Finally registered and ready to fly, HBA is the first of several Eurocopters intended to supplement the current Bell fleet, active in law enforcement since first acquired by Yugoslavia in the late 70s.

Antonov Design Bureau
Antonov An-225 Mriya
Zagreb - Pleso (ZAG / LDZA)
Croatia, November 8, 2013
Remark
Photographer
UR-82060 (cn 19530503763) The Beast is finally here! On it's first visit to Croatian soil, the Mriya is seen ticking itself cool after its ferry flight from Kiev. Hands down the biggest aviation event of the year, the 225 is in town to pick up a 140 ton locally-produced electrical transformer urgently needed in the Philippines. Ironically, at "just" EUR 1.5 million, the transformer is significantly cheaper than the EUR 2.2 million bill for flying it there...
