75-0043 (cn 142/A123) "Together again!" Apparently inseparable, the same pair of Eagles that formed the centerpiece of the last official sortie celebration for the 116th Fighter Wing, Georgia Air Guard at Dobbins ARB on August 30, 1995 (see photo 2034732), are now seen once again on the Dobbins transit-line almost 2 years later! They certainly look good in the colors of their new owners, the 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air Guard at Jacksonville International Airport, which also received several other ex-116th Eagles. |

164384 / AA-505 (cn I-724) One of only 7 aircraft left in service with Attack Sqn. 75 Sunday Punchers, Oceana, VA, this was the penultimate A-6 delivered a mere 5 years before, and it was now on its way to the boneyard! The Punchers were the first operational A-6 unit, taking it directly into Vietnam combat in 1965; by March '97, the unit was one of the last two to stand down. The Intruder was fading away... NAS Atlanta t-line. |

160024 / QG-06 (cn 14526) The Marine Air Reserve once boasted several attack squadrons, among them VMA-131 Diamondbacks from NAS Willow Grove, PA. This low-viz Scooter carries the diamond stripe that was not often seen on this scheme. A few years later (c.1994), the unit phased out the A-4M and stood down, a fate shared by most sister units. |

161662 / AA-502 (cn I-639) The tail-end of the Intruder, figuratively and literally. This was one of the last few flying with what was both the first and last (one of 2) operational A-6 sqn, VA-75 Sunday Punchers. This tail shot reveals a gallery of AirPac A-6 markings: VA-52 Knight Riders,VA-95 Green Lizards,VA-115 Arabs/Eagles,VA-128 Golden Intruders,VA-145 Swordsmen,VA-155 Silver Foxes,VA-165 Boomers,VA-185 Nighthawks,VA-196 Main Battery-- Atlantic sqns on other side? Probably the last A-6 visit to NAS Atlanta... |

162430 / MB-12 (cn 0272/A218) The vacant former Green Falcons flight line and a beautiful afternoon provide excellent conditions as this lone Flying Gators Hornet poses for its portrait. This was the first F/A-18 I saw from VMFA-142 (recently converted from A-4Ms) at Cecil Field, and it was clearly recently repainted; its finish is immaculate! I then little knew in less than three years, the Gators would be moving to NAS Atlanta... |

59-0090 (cn 8-24-219) The double "boom"of their hard-start afterburners echoes for miles behind them as a pair of Darts hurl down RWY 11 for a formation take off. The single seater once belonged to the 87th Fighter Interceptor Sqn, Red Bulls, K.I. Sawyer, MI, while the two-seater served with the 49th FIS Green Eagles at Griffiss AFB, NY. Both were now equipped for the aerial target (drone) mission, and were on their way back to Tyndall AFB, FL after a 3-day hurricane evac. stay at Dobbins. |

151808 (cn I-111) Change was in the air that sultry afternoon on the VA-205 Green Falcons ramp; actually, it was already on the ramp with the arrival of the first Intruder (see also photo 2159091). This marked a significant upgrade in potential for the Naval Air Reserve, giving it true all-weather attack capability for the first time (though A-6s had already been in fleet service for 25 years). As may be seen in the photo of the taxying tanker, it is fresh from re-work at St. Augustine and carries no unit markings. |

68-3814 / SR (cn 321-140) "Clear and a million" is what aviators would call this kind of day, and it was almost essential to obtain decent photos of a/c in the Europe 1 finish. This Bronco from the 21st Tactical Air Support Sqn., Shaw AFB, SC, appears to be recently painted and presents a pleasant appearance for dark camo. The name Raven carries a lot of history, going back to the Forward Air Controllers in the secret war in Laos. Interesting that the USAF still had Broncos assigned to this mission right up to Desert Storm!! |

149486 / ND-421 (cn I-15) It was Navy Secretary John Lehman's ambition to bring about "horizontal integration" in the reserves, and this photo records his legacy. After more than 20 years in the fleet, the all-weather Intruder began to equip the first Naval Air Reserve sqn., VA-304 Firebirds, Alameda, CA in 7-88. One of the unit's tankers is seen taxying away from the NAS Atlanta t-line for a -29 departure; it wears the initial, less colorful unit markings. |

151570 / AE-517 (cn I-52) The sun was just beginning to appear against a dark overcast when I snapped this shot of visiting A-6 tanker. It carries a transitional color scheme that includes full color insignia and low-viz markings; it was assigned to Attack Sqn. 176 Thunderbolts from NAS Oceana, VA. In the interest of increased visibility for air wing tankers, KA-6Ds soon carried hi-viz colors, markings, and unit insignia. |

64-14861 / 37315 (cn 382-4088) The shadows are growing long in this late-day shot of a weather Herk at the '88 Robins air show. Its assigned unit was the 403rd Tactical Airlift Wing, Keesler AFB, MS, which continued using these old -H models until c.2000 when they received the first of the brand new WC-130Js. As of April, 2013, this aircraft is used as a mission support (cargo) plane by the Puerto Rico ANG (thanks to Bob Daley for the corrected and additional info.). |

164341 (cn 616/D-21) An NAS Atlanta t-line crewman poses beneath a brand new Super Tomcat during a fuel stop on its delivery flight from Calverton, NY to NAS Miramar, CA. According to my source, it was accepted by VF-124 Gunfighters, the Pacific Fleet Readiness unit, on August 22, then later served with VF-11 and VF-31. |

NL3751D / 413586/C5-T (cn 122-39665) A hot and humid Friday afternoon in August, and a flight of Mustangs- yes, WW II P-51s- beats up the Dobbins runway. Warbird activity was very rare at this active military base, but on this occasion, the 357th Fighter Group (8th Air Force) reunion was held here and this was a special feature of the program. The lead aircraft is modeled after "Hurry Home Honey", the aircraft of Maj. "Pete" Peterson, followed by C5-N "Frenesi"; on left wing is Glamorous Glen III actually flown by Chuck Yeager himself!! |

76-0062 / JZ (cn 248/A214) In the late-90s, the 159th Fighter Wing at NAS/JRB New Orleans (Alvin Callendar Field) finally adopted the JZ tail code with the obvious reference to jazz (though they may have preferred CM for the ethnically derived but non-PC Coonass Militia!!). Here, one of that unit's aircraft so-marked rounds the corner after clearing the runway to taxy to its place in the static display for the NAS Atlanta 2000 air show. The A-model Eagles then operated by the 159th were replaced a few years later by F-15Cs. |
