58-0176 (cn 464244) Up close and personal with a BUFF (the B-52's universal nickname: Big Ugly Fat Fella). It's of the 668th Bomb, Sqn., 416th Bomb Wg, SAC, is seen shortly after take off, coming over the perimeter fence at characteristically low altitude. This BUFF shows evidence of the transition taking place in bomber color schemes at the time, with its Vietnam-era camouflage interrupted by replacement parts finished in the new Strategic Scheme dark gray. |

69-0015 (cn 500-0046) As usual for an air show at Robins AFB, the 2001 event afforded another opportunity to view "works-in-progress" by the Warner Robins Air Materiel Area in the outside maintenance facility. Here a C-5A is stripped of paint with No.4 GE TF-39GE-1C engine exposed while it undergoes PDM- Programmed Depot Level Maintenance. |

58-0184 (cn 464252) 668th Bomb. Sqn., 416th Bomb. Wing; cruise missile capable (first unit so-equipped). Air Force 58-0184. Note nose areas overpainted Gunship Gray; this was temporary measure to reduce visibility of highly reflective components. Bombers were eventually repainted in much darker scheme. |

57-6477 (cn 464182) Seeing these gigantic birds through my childhood (McCoy AFB, FL) to adulthood and beyond, this is the way I like to remember her: the full effect of her size and majesty as seen passing overhead, the multi-color camouflage, and the avalanche of sound, which can only be imagined if you never saw a B-52G in flight (the still-flying -H model is quieter). This 416th Bomb. Wing, 668 B.S. BUFF shows change in c/s with temporarily darkened reflective surfaces prior to a darker c/s; light radome is notable. |

N650PF (cn 118) (NASA 650) was a G-II modified for the joint NASA/ Lockheed Propfan Test Assessment program. The aircraft was fitted with a turboprop engine driving a "propfan" on the left wing only; a thick shield was applied to the side of the fuselage nearest the fan blades for protection. Also of interest are the long instrumentation boom and small counterweight on the left wing, and the much larger counterweight on the right wing, for balance purposes. The PTA program ran for about a year. |

60-0059 / LA (cn 464424) Nose detail of the 96th Bomb Sqn. CO's BUFF from the 2nd BW at Barksdale AFB, LA at the 2001 Robins AFB air show. Of interest here are the squadron insignia based on the WW I era 96th Aero Sqn., the commander's name, Lt. Col. Timothy Leaptrott, and the conspicuous skin wrinkles, which are often mis-identified as evidence of aging, but were actually present when factory fresh and are due to tension from wing flex and weight (called Wagner Tension Field). |

154172 / 2 (cn 13629) This tight close-up of Blue Angels #2 emphasizes the compactness of the "Tinker Toy" design. The performance the maintenance crew are preparing her for will be one of the last few Skyhawk shows for the Blues; in a few months they would begin the transition to the Hornet, which is still the team's equipment. Photographed on the south parallel taxiway (their temporary parking) next to NAS Atlanta. |

57***** A 416th Bombardment Wing B-52 passes over Rabbit Road outside the perimeter fence on takeoff. Spewing the dark smoke trails that accompany the use of water injection (making cooler, denser air in the compression and combustion chambers and increasing thrust) for a heavyweight takeoff, this BUFF bears the dark green/dark gray Strategic Scheme, which also affords a seldom seen view of steam venting from the undersides of the engine nacelles due to the water injection. |
