USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 30, 1991
Remark
Photographer
162604 / NE-205 (cn 526) The NC-8A power cart is hooked up to the receptacle next to the nose gear door as the pilot of Bullet 205 signals the transit line crewman that he's going to start No. 2 engine. Present the same afternoon as its colorful squadron mate, Bullet 202 (#1987566), this TPS gray Tomcat is more representative of current VF-2 Bounty Hunter color schemes with its monochrome Langley stripe (at least the crew's helmets still carry it in full color!!).

Grumman F-14D Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 7, 1991
Remark
Photographer
164341 (cn 616/D-21) An NAS Atlanta t-line crewman poses beneath a brand new Super Tomcat during a fuel stop on its delivery flight from Calverton, NY to NAS Miramar, CA. According to my source, it was accepted by VF-124 Gunfighters, the Pacific Fleet Readiness unit, on August 22, then later served with VF-11 and VF-31.

Convair QF-106A Delta Dart (8)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 4, 1995
Remark
Photographer
59-0090 (cn 8-24-219) The double "boom"of their hard-start afterburners echoes for miles behind them as a pair of Darts hurl down RWY 11 for a formation take off. The single seater once belonged to the 87th Fighter Interceptor Sqn, Red Bulls, K.I. Sawyer, MI, while the two-seater served with the 49th FIS Green Eagles at Griffiss AFB, NY. Both were now equipped for the aerial target (drone) mission, and were on their way back to Tyndall AFB, FL after a 3-day hurricane evac. stay at Dobbins.

Starfighters Demo Team
Lockheed CF-104D Starfighter Mk1
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 15, 1998
Remark
Photographer
N104RB (cn 583A-5302) The 1998 NAS Atlanta air show was the first time I saw the Starfighters team perform, and they arrived the Friday before the show in style! After landing, the two aircraft (a single- and two-seater) taxied over by the NAS Atlanta ramp and posed for photos, then taxied back up the ramp to the VFA-203 line which was their assigned place for the show. The registration N104RB is the same as that assigned to Darryl Greenamayer's crashed record-breaking Red Baron Starfighter.

USA - Air Force
Lockheed C-5A Galaxy (L-500)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 1984
Remark
Photographer
70-0464 (cn 500-0078) Its GE TF-39 turbofans scream at crescendo as this Galaxy climbs over US Hwy. 41 after a Runway 11 take off. This was very likely one of the A-models brought to Marietta at that time (it carries 436th Military Airlift Wing (Dover, DE) markings on the tail) for the re-wing program; as I recall, it did a lot of "closed traffic" work in the pattern that afternoon. I always thought the original color scheme was much better at truly conveying the huge scale of the C-5 than the current overall Proud AMC Gray.

USA - Navy
Grumman KA-6D Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 22, 1990
Remark
Photographer
151808 (cn I-111) Change was in the air that sultry afternoon on the VA-205 Green Falcons ramp; actually, it was already on the ramp with the arrival of the first Intruder (see also photo 2159091). This marked a significant upgrade in potential for the Naval Air Reserve, giving it true all-weather attack capability for the first time (though A-6s had already been in fleet service for 25 years). As may be seen in the photo of the taxying tanker, it is fresh from re-work at St. Augustine and carries no unit markings.

Grumman A-6E Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, January 23, 1997
Remark
Photographer
164384 / AA-505 (cn I-724) One of only 7 aircraft left in service with Attack Sqn. 75 Sunday Punchers, Oceana, VA, this was the penultimate A-6 delivered a mere 5 years before, and it was now on its way to the boneyard! The Punchers were the first operational A-6 unit, taking it directly into Vietnam combat in 1965; by March '97, the unit was one of the last two to stand down. The Intruder was fading away... NAS Atlanta t-line.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 31, 1991
Remark
Photographer
58-0181 (cn 464249) All is quiet on the Dobbins line as early evening light descends in this scene from the Friday before the 1991 air show. The fleur de lys design on the tail of this BUFF was then the unit marking of the 2nd Bomb. Wing, Barksdale AFB, LA, and it models the dull Strategic Scheme (dark gray and dark green) in the waning light. Interestingly, it bears the name The Witch II in tribute to a WW II B-24D of the 98th Bomb. Group that participated in the disastrous Aug. 1943 Ploesti mission.

USA - Marines
McDonnell Douglas A-4M Skyhawk II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, July 30, 1991
Remark
Photographer
160024 / QG-06 (cn 14526) The Marine Air Reserve once boasted several attack squadrons, among them VMA-131 Diamondbacks from NAS Willow Grove, PA. This low-viz Scooter carries the diamond stripe that was not often seen on this scheme. A few years later (c.1994), the unit phased out the A-4M and stood down, a fate shared by most sister units.

USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat (G-303)
Birmingham - Shuttlesworth International (BHM / KBHM)
USA - Alabama, September 1987
Remark
Photographer
162702 / AJ-201 (cn 548) A swashbuckling navy fighter with an unaccustomed "Constable landscape" pastoral background! The tree-covered hills around Birmingham airport do provide scenic surroundings as preparations are underway for the departure of this nearly new VF-84 Jolly Rogers Block 140 Tomcat at the end of the 1987 air show. It displays the typical delivery scheme of overall Gloss Gull Gray with colorful markings for this block of aircraft.

USA - Air Force
McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, July 28, 1998
Remark
Photographer
77-0139 (cn 428/A351) Golden Eagle... The same day I was overjoyed to photograph a hi-viz Eagle up close (#2019420), I puzzled over this other F-15 parked next to it. Assigned also to the 412th Test Wing at Edwards AFB, CA, this example wore a metallic bronze/silver finish (except for the nose radome and other small parts); apparently it was a prototype of the F-22 operational color scheme. Like the its squadron mate, this one was at Dobbins for a "dress rehearsal" prior to the first flight of the second EMD F-22A.

Grumman F-14B Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 20, 1991
Remark
Photographer
163215 / AA-204 (cn 576) Until 1991, the aircraft of Fighting 103 Sluggers (Oceana, VA) wore a yellow (or low-viz gray) arrow marking on their tails. However, the insignia changed to possibly reflect the call sign, Clubleaf (the sqn. insignia also), as shown on these two Tomcats in for fuel at the NAS Atlanta t-line. Incidentally, Clubleaf 203's BuNo (overpainted on this side) is 162920; the light blue paint as compared to Clubleaf 204 is notable.

USA - Air Force
North American Rockwell OV-10A Bronco
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 15, 1990
Remark
Photographer
68-3814 / SR (cn 321-140) "Clear and a million" is what aviators would call this kind of day, and it was almost essential to obtain decent photos of a/c in the Europe 1 finish. This Bronco from the 21st Tactical Air Support Sqn., Shaw AFB, SC, appears to be recently painted and presents a pleasant appearance for dark camo. The name Raven carries a lot of history, going back to the Forward Air Controllers in the secret war in Laos. Interesting that the USAF still had Broncos assigned to this mission right up to Desert Storm!!

Grumman KA-6D Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, April 16, 1989
Remark
Photographer
149486 / ND-421 (cn I-15) It was Navy Secretary John Lehman's ambition to bring about "horizontal integration" in the reserves, and this photo records his legacy. After more than 20 years in the fleet, the all-weather Intruder began to equip the first Naval Air Reserve sqn., VA-304 Firebirds, Alameda, CA in 7-88. One of the unit's tankers is seen taxying away from the NAS Atlanta t-line for a -29 departure; it wears the initial, less colorful unit markings.

Grumman A-6E Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 19, 1990
Remark
Photographer
160995 / AD-530 (cn I-596) This Attack Squadron 42 Green Pawns Intruder gets a last lookover from VA-205 maintenance crew before taxying to the Dobbins runway for takeoff. At this time, the Green Falcons were in the thick of transitioning from the A-7 Corsair II to the A-6, and the Green Pawns, as the East Coast Fleet Replacement Intruder sqn., were quite essential to producing trained flight and ground crew for the unit. The red flap extension areas are a somewhat unusual detail.
