USA - Air Force
Convair QF-106A Delta Dart (8)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 4, 1995
Remark
Photographer
59-0090 (cn 8-24-219) The double "boom"of their hard-start afterburners echoes for miles behind them as a pair of Darts hurl down RWY 11 for a formation take off. The single seater once belonged to the 87th Fighter Interceptor Sqn, Red Bulls, K.I. Sawyer, MI, while the two-seater served with the 49th FIS Green Eagles at Griffiss AFB, NY. Both were now equipped for the aerial target (drone) mission, and were on their way back to Tyndall AFB, FL after a 3-day hurricane evac. stay at Dobbins.

USA - Air Force
Lockheed C-5A Galaxy (L-500)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 1984
Remark
Photographer
70-0464 (cn 500-0078) Its GE TF-39 turbofans scream at crescendo as this Galaxy climbs over US Hwy. 41 after a Runway 11 take off. This was very likely one of the A-models brought to Marietta at that time (it carries 436th Military Airlift Wing (Dover, DE) markings on the tail) for the re-wing program; as I recall, it did a lot of "closed traffic" work in the pattern that afternoon. I always thought the original color scheme was much better at truly conveying the huge scale of the C-5 than the current overall Proud AMC Gray.

USA - Navy
Grumman A-6E Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, January 23, 1997
Remark
Photographer
164384 / AA-505 (cn I-724) One of only 7 aircraft left in service with Attack Sqn. 75 Sunday Punchers, Oceana, VA, this was the penultimate A-6 delivered a mere 5 years before, and it was now on its way to the boneyard! The Punchers were the first operational A-6 unit, taking it directly into Vietnam combat in 1965; by March '97, the unit was one of the last two to stand down. The Intruder was fading away... NAS Atlanta t-line.

USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat (G-303)
Birmingham - Shuttlesworth International (BHM / KBHM)
USA - Alabama, September 1987
Remark
Photographer
162702 / AJ-201 (cn 548) A swashbuckling navy fighter with an unaccustomed "Constable landscape" pastoral background! The tree-covered hills around Birmingham airport do provide scenic surroundings as preparations are underway for the departure of this nearly new VF-84 Jolly Rogers Block 140 Tomcat at the end of the 1987 air show. It displays the typical delivery scheme of overall Gloss Gull Gray with colorful markings for this block of aircraft.

McDonnell Douglas A-4M Skyhawk II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, July 30, 1991
Remark
Photographer
160024 / QG-06 (cn 14526) The Marine Air Reserve once boasted several attack squadrons, among them VMA-131 Diamondbacks from NAS Willow Grove, PA. This low-viz Scooter carries the diamond stripe that was not often seen on this scheme. A few years later (c.1994), the unit phased out the A-4M and stood down, a fate shared by most sister units.

USA - Air Force
Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 17, 1986
Remark
Photographer
59-2567 (cn 464330) Aluminum Overcast... The sun shines brightly on the weathered flanks of this BUFF as it passes low overhead on take off. Like many other 416th BW B-52s I saw that year, this one's surface is a patchwork of the old SIOP camouflage and dark replacement parts painted in the new "strategic scheme". The "shouldered" look to the forward wingroot is the so-called strake; a structural modification (and visible to satellites) indicative of the cruise missile mod. The 416th was the first USAF unit so-equipped.

USA - Navy
McDonnell Douglas TA-4J Skyhawk
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 30, 1994
Remark
Photographer
158146 / A-722 (cn 14183) While somewhat dirty, this Scooter nevertheless looks sharp in its International Orange/Insignia White training colors. Visiting the NAS Atlanta t-line from NAS Meridian, MS where it is assigned to VT-7 Tigers, this TA-4 seems to be buttoned up for an overnight stay. However, the small door hanging open near the wing leading edge normally covers the receptacle for the NC-8A power cart plug.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat (G-303)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, July 1986
Remark
Photographer
159856 / NH-107 Another variation on the overall Gloss Gull Gray theme on Tomcats, this one carries color sqn. markings and national insignia (though very small). Assigned to Fighting 114 Aardvarks, it rests in the sun on the VA-205 ramp on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The red cover for the Television Camera Unit under the nose is a rarely seen detail.

Grumman A-6E Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, February 7, 1997
Remark
Photographer
161662 / AA-502 (cn I-639) The tail-end of the Intruder, figuratively and literally. This was one of the last few flying with what was both the first and last (one of 2) operational A-6 sqn, VA-75 Sunday Punchers. This tail shot reveals a gallery of AirPac A-6 markings: VA-52 Knight Riders,VA-95 Green Lizards,VA-115 Arabs/Eagles,VA-128 Golden Intruders,VA-145 Swordsmen,VA-155 Silver Foxes,VA-165 Boomers,VA-185 Nighthawks,VA-196 Main Battery-- Atlantic sqns on other side? Probably the last A-6 visit to NAS Atlanta...

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A Hornet
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, November 16, 1994
Remark
Photographer
162430 / MB-12 (cn 0272/A218) The vacant former Green Falcons flight line and a beautiful afternoon provide excellent conditions as this lone Flying Gators Hornet poses for its portrait. This was the first F/A-18 I saw from VMFA-142 (recently converted from A-4Ms) at Cecil Field, and it was clearly recently repainted; its finish is immaculate! I then little knew in less than three years, the Gators would be moving to NAS Atlanta...

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, November 24, 1996
Remark
Photographer
164676 / NK-410 (cn 1106/C292) Seeing a Hornet parked on the NAS Atlanta main flight line was always good; seeing 4 was outstanding! Here we have a mix of units and models in this early Sunday morning portrait: 2 "C" models from VFA-25 Fist of the Fleet, NAS Lemoore, CA, an "A" model from VFA-204 River Rattlers, NAS New Orleans, LA, and lastly, a "D" model (marked "Marines") assigned to VFA-125 Rough Raiders, also from Lemoore. The landmark NAS Atlanta Hangar 1 looks on in the background.

McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, April 22, 1997
Remark
Photographer
75-0043 (cn 142/A123) "Together again!" Apparently inseparable, the same pair of Eagles that formed the centerpiece of the last official sortie celebration for the 116th Fighter Wing, Georgia Air Guard at Dobbins ARB on August 30, 1995 (see photo 2034732), are now seen once again on the Dobbins transit-line almost 2 years later! They certainly look good in the colors of their new owners, the 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air Guard at Jacksonville International Airport, which also received several other ex-116th Eagles.

General Dynamics FB-111A Aardvark
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, June 26, 1987
Remark
Photographer
68-0265 (cn B1-37) SAC "heavy" metal! The day before the 1987 Griffiss AFB air show was a lot of fun with arriving display aircraft and their impromptu performances. However, this dark, menacing FB-111 from Plattsburgh AFB (roughly 250 mi. from Griffiss on Lake Champlain) did not attend the show, but nevertheless entertained with a long series of low approaches and very noisy go-arounds beneath an overcast sky. The 380th Bombardment Wing insignia may be discerned below the cockpit (a sword presented vertically downward and a cloud on either side).

Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, March 23, 1989
Remark
Photographer
162590 / NG-202 (cn 512) Fighting 24 was once known as the Red Checkertails, partnering with lookalike squadron VF-211 Checkmates. Sometime during the 1980s, their name was changed to Renegades, although their markings and colors were unaltered. Here is the XO's plane on a very wet day, one of the few Tomcats I photographed wearing the overall Gloss Gull Gray with dark markings scheme. The Renegades were then located at NAS Miramar, CA.

Remark
Photographer
159423 / AE-201 (cn 89) This rough old bird looks like it's been around a cruise or two! The callsign for Fighting 32 Swordsmen (NAS Oceana, VA) is Gypsy, and there was a short time (a couple of years) in the 1980s when squadron aircraft carried a gypsy version of the Grumman Tomcat character on their tails. This is the Skipper's bird with a monochrome version. A notable detail is the damaged ventral fins- I was told this was common due to hard carrier landings, though I never saw them quite so chewed up!
