LAC - Lignes Aeriennes Congolaises
Douglas DC-8-54(F)
Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), November 14, 2006
Remark
Photographer
9Q-CLV (cn 45610/122) Stuck at the ramp of GOM for almost five years, when this pic was taken. Lava overran the only taxiway, so the DC-8 couldn't leave anymore. In the beginning, they let the engines run daily, but at some point in time, this one became wfu. In the foreground the new taxiway to the ramp, but that one is too late for Lima Victor. As a sort of New Year's resolution Goma's ramp was cleaned early January 2011 and this DC-8 together with other defunct aircraft were dragged to a spot designated as cemetery.

Untitled (Kivu Air)
CASA C-212-200 Aviocar
In Flight
Congo (Kinshasa), May 23, 2006
Remark
Photographer
9Q-CCW (cn 263) This is why flying in Congo has so much attraction to pilots: right after take off from Shabunda (FZMW), the pilot banks the empty CASA to the right, to make a low pass over the river nearby.

CASA C-212-200 Aviocar
Baraka
Congo (Kinshasa), June 2006
Remark
Photographer
9Q-CCW (cn 263) A few seconds before touchdown.. Underneath the Casa a typical African scene. All the houses are empty, because the whole village has gone out to the strip to welcome the plane.

Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), November 2, 2006
Remark
Photographer
When you fly from Butembo to Goma (North-Kivu), you fly along Nyiragongo, an active vulcano at about 18 kms from Goma's city centre. The next thing you see is the airport. The black rocks once were lava that ran over the runway and destroyed the city's centre. In the background Lake Kivu and the hills of Rwanda.

Untitled (Kisangani Airlift)
Antonov An-8
Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), September 4, 2006
Remark
Photographer
S9-DBC (cn 0G3410) Goma was getting used to the appearance of this old lady, nicknamed 'kit' ('whale') by Russians. Here the machine returns from its second sortie of the day. The plane has been withdrawn from use and was awaiting its fate at the end of an unpaved platform at Goma for while. Early January 2011 the plane has been moved to a spot away from the active ramps, and together with a DC-8, An-12 and B727 waiting for things to happen. Late 2012 the Antonov was seen with engines, doors and hatches removed.

Untitled (Kivu Air)
CASA C-212-200 Aviocar
Walikale
Congo (Kinshasa), May 23, 2006
Remark
Photographer
9Q-CCW (cn 263) Since Walikale is nothing more than a road without a platform, planes have to land, (un)load and leave immediately again, otherwise they block the strip. Here it is clearly visible that Walikale is actually a road. When there is no plane on the strip regular car traffic uses the road.

Hewa Bora Airways
Boeing 727-22
Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), May 7, 2010
Remark
Photographer
9Q-COP (cn 18323/136) Taken on one of its last flights before it 'disappeared'. A HBA mechanic based in Goma said in Jan 2011 that COP would return into service as addition to the MD82s. The plane was seen in Feb 2011 in the MX area of Kinshasa's N'Djili airport (South end), as well as all other HBA 727s (-200 series) that were phased out by 2009-2010 and 3 HBA cargo jets (727F, DC-8F and 707F). Oscar Papa reentered service, but crashed on July 8th, 2011 in short finals of Kisangani Int'l in bad WX conditions.

Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), November 2, 2006
Remark
Photographer
Goma's flightline on an average day. An-12s 9Q-CVM and 3C-AAL are parked at the left end of the runway, 9Q-CBD of CAA is parked at the new taxiway. A few L410s are parked right next to the runway as An-12 S9-PSK, a Dash 8 of ECHO Flight and an An-32.

Hewa Bora Airways
Boeing 727-22
Kisangani - Bangoka International (FKI / FZIC)
Congo (Kinshasa), July 22, 2011
Remark
Photographer
9Q-COP (cn 18323/136) Runway 31 of Kisangani International. At the bottom on the right is clearly the spot visible where 9Q-COP crashed two weeks before, some parts of the unfortunate aircraft are still laying there. Pending the inquiry the AAC (DRCongo CAA) has suspended operations of HBA. The airline CAA is the only airline during this suspension that is operating nationwide. Compagnie Africaine de l'Aviation recently acquired a 'new' A320, 9Q-CCA.

Untitled (Trident Aviation)
De Havilland Canada DHC-5D Buffalo
Lokichoggio (LKG / HKLK)
Kenya, September 29, 2008
Remark
Photographer
5Y-OPL (cn 84) Nice image of a less nice happening: due to a malfunctioning wheel door, the right gear leg could not unfold, forcing the crew to make a 'gear up' landing. Nobody got injured, but the plane was written off, leaving Loki without a 'can do' workhorse. Trident is working hard to get 5Y-TAJ (c/n 108) up and running again.

Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), November 2, 2006
Remark
Photographer
An overview of FZNA. The ramps on the left and in front of the terminal are in use by UN/MONUC forces with their Mi-24/-8 choppers. The light coloured taxiway is new and forces the Mils to be displaced to the platform behind the flightline in order to clear the platform for jetliners. In the background you can see the runway of Gisenyi, Rwanda.

India - Air Force
Mil Mi-35E
Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), September 11, 2010
Remark
Photographer
Z3131 / UN-889 (cn 110943) A number of various Indian AF Mil-helicopters is based in DRCongo flying for Monusco, the UN-force in the country. Among the types are Mi-25/35 battlefield choppers. Here Z3131 is taxiing down to RWY 18 for a training sortie in the pouring rain. Behind the gunner's cockpit a signboard of the German-funded project that is removing the petrified lava in order to extend the RWY to the length it had before 2002.

Hewa Bora Airways
Boeing 727-22
Kisangani - Bangoka International (FKI / FZIC)
Congo (Kinshasa), August 16, 2011
Remark
Photographer
9Q-COP (cn 18323/136) More than a month after the crash of the aircraft debris was still scattered over the place where it ended up. The Boeing must have made a 180 turn when it hit the ground: the tail points towards the runway. Unconfirmed stories speak about the aircraft having an excessive number of passengers on board and that it was low on fuel when it reached Kisangani.

Untitled
Antonov An-12B
Entebbe - International (EBB / HUEN)
Uganda, December 12, 2009
Remark
Photographer
4L-IRA (cn 9346510) A black backdrop which makes you think of something really bad that has happened. It was 'just' a fuel pipeline on fire, which made the authorities evacuate the airport -as a precaution. After an hour or so, the fire was extinguished and operations were continued. The 4L-IRA was not the only An-12 around. Three colleagues were parked at a ramp close to the UN-part of the airport.

Untitled (Services Air)
Antonov An-12
Goma (GOM / FZNA)
Congo (Kinshasa), October 15, 2006
Remark
Photographer
ER-AXI (cn 6344310) In the Western world, it would be headlines news: people walking over a runway. In some African countries, it is the most common thing. More common than sitting next to a runway with a 400mm telelens. Thanks to the people of the RVA -Airport Authorities- noone was bothering me, making this shot.
