Untitled
Polikarpov I-153
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-JKM / 75 (cn 7027) Is the AFC's I-153 'Chaika' (Seagull) taxiing back to the static area. This aircraft was built in Russia under AFC supervision and imported to NZ. It is extremely manoueverable and has a very distinct sound - much like a high-rev chugging! This is one of three examples owned by the AFC...

New Zealand - Air Force
Boeing 727-22C
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
NZ7272 (cn 19895/658) This was the most impressive display I have ever seen from any airliner, and one of the best displays at the Wanaka airshow. NZ7272 is put through it's paces in close proximity to the crowd, and YES he did climb and bank that hard!! This would also be the loudest display of the show!

Untitled
Grumman (General Motors) FM-2 Wildcat
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 30, 2002
Remark
Photographer
N5833 / 86819/00 (cn 5877) Taxiing back to the static area after it's display (it shot down the bad guy). This most welcome visitor to Wanaka is owned by the Confederate Air Force (donated by Bob Reiss) and was shipped out here for the Wanaka airshow. The display pilot was Dave Morss, and I understand he enjoyed the lack of politics/litigation in our airspace (relative to the US) during the airshow. Both Dave & the Wildcat would be most welcome back here anytime...

Untitled
Curtiss P-40E Warhawk
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, April 1, 2002
Remark
Photographer
NX940AK (cn 15411) AFC pilot John Lamont taxis Tony Banta's P-40 for a photo sortie over the mountains around Wanaka. This Kitty was restored by Pioneer Aero Restorations Ltd after the original parts were imported by Tony. P.A.R.Ltd have made quite a name for themselves as specialist P-40 restorers and have worked on a few machines for overseas owners. This ex RCAF Kitty was finished just before the airshow and flown down to Wanaka, after which it was flown north again and then shipped to join Tony's collection in the US.

Untitled
North American P-51D Mustang
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, April 1, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-PLI / 473420/524 (cn 122-39879) 'Miss Torque' gets airborne with some lucky sod getting a back-seat ride. The pilot on this occasion is Steve Taylor, an international aerobatics champ who also performed a fantastic aerobatic display at the same airshow in his Edge 540. I'd rather have the Mustang myself...:-)

New Zealand, April 1, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-PLI / 473420/524 (cn 122-39879) 'Miss Torque' - the Alpine Fighter Collection's P-51D. She is half owned by Sir Tim Wallis and Brian Hore, and flown at this event by reknown aerobatic pilot Steve Taylor. He must enjoy the large american cockpits, as he is NOT a small man! 'Miss Torque' is currently for sale, hopefully she has a Kiwi buyer - it would be a shame to lose her overseas.. :-(

Flying Fighters
Hawker Fury FB10
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
VH-SHF / WJ232/O-114 (cn 41H/643827) I love this machine!! This baby is an ex NZ warbird (ex ZK-SFR), but was sold to the Aussies (we lose to them again!) and now resides in Queensland with the 'Flying Fighters Collection'. It was flown over the Tasman for it's Wanaka appearance, which made 7 trans-Tasman trips upon its return to Aussie.

New Zealand, March 30, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-UDO (cn 04412) Lifts off for it's display at Wanaka. This is an ex RNZAF communications aircraft (NZ1821) and is now owned by a syndicate in the North Island. I had the pleasure of flying in this aircraft at the 1992 Wanaka airshow.

Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, April 1, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-PLI / 473420/524 (cn 122-39879) My personal favourite in the Alpine Fighter Collection, 'Miss Torque' the AFC's P-51D Mustang. She never saw combat service, moving through Air National Guard units before being sold to a private collector. She was then purchased by Sir Tim Wallis and Brian Hore in 1993. Sadly, I believe she is now for sale....

MBB-Kawasaki BK-117B-2
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-HUP (cn 1031) The local Air Ambulance Rescue Helicopter at the 'Warbirds over Wanaka' airshow during the mass heli-display. The Squirrel in the background is a visiting Police machine from Auckland I believe. The lighting at this stage was crap but I liked the shot and took it...

New Zealand - Air Force
Pacific Aerospace CT-4E Airtrainer
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
NZ1990 (cn 205) Two Airtrainers of the RNZAF's 'Red Checkers' aerobatic display team at the 'Warbirds Over Wanaka' 2002 Airshow. NZ1980 (inverted) and one of it's sisters perform their trademark 'Mirror Formation' for the crowd. The rudders are between 6 and 4 feet apart throughout this manoeuvre.

Cessna O-1A Bird Dog (305A/L-19A)
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 31, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-DOG 53-8031 taxiing after it's display. The orange paint scheme is quite a contrast from the usual green/grey drab jobs! This O-1A is in immaculate condition - I believe it was involved in an accident near here in 1996 and was stored for a period before becoming airworthy again.

Untitled
Aerospatiale (Westland) SA-341C Gazelle HT2
Wanaka (WKA / NZWF)
New Zealand, March 30, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-HTF (cn WA1436) Ex RN Gazelle HTF, one of a small number of Gazelles privately imported into New Zealand and reassembled in Christchurch. This machine also flew with the RN's 'Flying Sharks' display team, and I believe these choppers are the fastest production helicopters in NZ. HTF's RN rego was XX446 (cheers Craig!), and I'm pretty sure a few of these Gazelles are for sale...

Origin Pacific Airways
De Havilland Canada DHC-8-315 Dash 8
Christchurch - International (CHC / NZCH)
New Zealand, June 7, 2002
Remark
Photographer
ZK-NEQ (cn 397) A former Qantas New Zealand Dash-8, now operating with Origin Pacific Airways. These flights are co-shared with Qantas, who's CHC Terminal is on the left of the image. Qantas 737 VH-CZS is prepared for another flight in the background. Note the the main landing gear bay doors on the engine nacelle...looks a bit awkward.
