Passing O'Hare for a landing to the west. Just beyond the runways on the right is a small green area. Just to the left of that are some trees. That is the crash site of American Flight 191 in 1979. There is still no memorial to the 273 people who died there. Sad. |

N667JM (cn 3444) The pilot was picking up an advertising banner to tow when the banner became hung up on itself and formed a bow. The pilot then turned around and began a shallow descent to drop the banner The towrope then became entangled with the tail rotor, which eventually separated from the helicopter. The pilot initiated an autorotation to stop the ensuing rotation of the helicopter. Pilot was hospitalized with serious injuries. |

N775UA (cn 26947/22) This was the 2nd revenue flight by N775UA in United's new livery. It was also the "Oscar" flight. In the passenger cabin were United's Senior Vice President, Marketing people, a reporter and TV film crew for Entertainment Tonight, the artist who designed this years Oscar poster, and one of the Oscar statues with an escort from the manufacturer. In the pits were the rest of the Oscars, which were delivered to Frank Pierson, President of the Academy, during a ceremony at gate 72 after arrival. |

01-0196 (cn F-103/P-96) Arriving in Long Beach for extensive repairs (it was still here at the end of January), this airplane rolled off the runway at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, while landing on Aug. 6 2005, damaging its nose and right main landing gears. As a result, the runway was closed, as when it came to rest, one of the C-17’s wings extended over the active runway. The red painted “nose art” is most likely a prank, as it does not appear on the other side! Thanks to Kevin Smith for the info tip! |
