China Airlines
Sud SE-210 Caravelle III
Taipei - Sung Shan (TSA / RCSS)
Taiwan, 1973
Remark
Photographer
B-1850 (cn 121) China Airlines had purchased the Caravelles from Swissair. B-1852 was lost on November 20, 1971 while enroute Taipei to Hong Kong. It exploded in mid-air. The picture was taken at TSA. It was then the only airport in Taipei and was used for both Internation and domestic. It is now domestic only. Before international operations were moved to the present day Chiang Kai Shek Airport in nearby Taoyuan (50 Km away), the TPE code was used for Shung Shan Airport. The ROCAF also based their VIP fleet there.

China Airlines
Boeing 707-309C
Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed)
China - Hong Kong, 1973
Remark
Photographer
B-1826 (cn 20262/830) This happened on the final leg of a student charter flight SFO/HNL/HND/TPE/HKG. It landed in that July morning like a rocket ship and promptly overran runway 13. We were very lucky that Kai Tek was under expension at the time including the lengthening of the runway, otherwise we would've been in the water. Almost twenty years later in 1994 a near brand new China Airlines B747-400 did the same only this time it did go swimming and was written off by the airline.

Cathay Pacific Airways
Boeing 707-351B/SCD
Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed)
China - Hong Kong, 1972
Remark
Photographer
VR-HGN (cn 18693/348) Ex Northwest bird as Cathay Pacific never bought any new B707s from Boeing. The Cathay B707s however were the first ones in the world to have installed the then-new "wide-body look" interior. The B707s played a major role in Cathay's growth during the seventies. They took over from the CV-880 fleet and were still going strong even after the first L-1011s joined the fleet.

Cathay Pacific Airways
Convair 880-22M-21
Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed)
China - Hong Kong, 1972
Remark
Photographer
VR-HFY (cn 22-7-2-54) Cathay transitioned into the jet age when the Convair 880s joined the fleet. Two new birds were purchased from Convair to replace the Lockheed Electras. The airline subsiquently operated a fleet of eight CV-880s. Two were lost - one ran off runway-13 after a nose tire blew during take-off; the other one exploded by a bomb over central Vietnam while enroute BKK/HKG.

Lockheed
Lockheed L-1011-385-1 TriStar 1
Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed)
China - Hong Kong, 1972
Remark
Photographer
This pre-delivered Eastern TriStar was in Hong Kong during its world demo tour. Cathay Pacific was the primary target; however, no sale was made during this trip. As a matter of fact, Cathay was going for the DC-10 a few years later and changed its mind at the 11th hour after high level persuasion from none other than big brother in London.

Taiwan, 1973
Remark
Photographer
B-2015 (cn 414) Far Eastern Air Tansport was the largest domestic airline in Taiwan for many many years and still is today. The Viscounts were the backbone of the fleet when it stepped into and through out the 1970's. A few Caravelles were added to compete with China Airlines.

China - Hong Kong, 1972
Remark
Photographer
HL7403 (cn 18164/242) This was an ex Eastern non-fan B720 getting ready for landing at runway-13. The airline had painted Boeing 707 / 720 just behind the aft pax doors. Korean airlines started flying to Hong Kong with a single DC-9-30. It graduated to the larger B-720 before ordering a new B-707-3B5C.
