Lockheed NC-121K Warning Star (L-1049A)
Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (Municipal) (DMA / KDMA)
USA - Arizona, November 1969
Remark
Photographer
143220 (cn 4494) Amidst a considerable number of USAF EC-121s that were arriving for storage was a solitary US Navy example. NC-121K 143220 had actually arrived at Davis-Monthan in May 1969 after bailment to Lockheed at Burbank, but was still awaiting attention six months later, in mid-November.

Remark
Photographer
62-4361 / HI (cn D561) Heading west soon after getting airborne from Hill AFB, this brace of F-105Ds from the 466th TFS were bound for a range and some exhilarating low-level work.

Republic F-105F Thunderchief
In Flight
USA - Utah, February 1984
Remark
Photographer
63-8287 / HI (cn F64) The final aerial refuelling and F-105F 63-8287 pulls away from the boom after taking a top-up for the last time. This particular aircraft was the last to land back at Hill, but not before the opportunity was taken to perform a few spirited fast passes over the airfield.

Remark
Photographer

61-2051 (cn BQ0005) Two Strategic Air Command Bomb Wings – the 43rd and 305th BWs – were equipped with the Convair B-58A Hustler and both were represented amongst the first few examples of this remarkable warplane to be sent for storage at Davis-Monthan.

Republic F-105G Thunderchief
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 1982
Remark
Photographer
63-8316 (cn F093) The paintwork may look a bit shabby, but there’s no denying the imposing bulk of the Thunderchief. Carrying several practice bombs, F-105G 63-8316 of the Georgia ANG still looks the business, even though it had less than a year to go before retirement.

Douglas C-118A Liftmaster (DC-6A)
Northolt (NHT / EGWU)
UK - England, September 9, 1968
Remark
Photographer
53-3289 / 57 (cn 44660/627) Following use by the Military Air Transport Service, many C-118 Liftmasters found a new lease of life as staff transports, serving with distinction in this role for many years. C-118A 53-3289, was typical of those aircraft assigned to Headquarters Command’s 1001st Air Base Wing at Andrews AFB, Maryland. The individual aircraft code number '57’ was carried on the nosewheel doors, this being a typical feature of most HEDCOM aircraft and helicopters.

Douglas C-124C Globemaster II
Mildenhall (MHZ / GXH / EGUN)
UK - England, February 1972
Remark
Photographer
51-0177 (cn 43511) Initially with the Military Airlift Transport Service and latterly with the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II was a frequent visitor to Mildenhall and was even a temporary resident for a few months in 1968-69. By 1972, it had disappeared from front-line service, but remained active with second-line echelons until the autumn of 1974. Captured on film at Mildenhall in February 1972, C-124C 51-177 of the Air Force Reserve’s 901st Military Airlift Group had barely six

Republic F-105D Thunderchief
In Flight
USA - Utah, October 1983
Remark
Photographer
62-4387 / HI (cn D586) The F-105’s unique wing planform is displayed to advantage as F-105D 62-4361 of the 466th TFS breaks to enter the landing pattern at Hill AFB, while the pilot of 62-4387 prepares to follow suit.

Boeing B-52F Stratofortress
Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (Municipal) (DMA / KDMA)
USA - Arizona, July 1969
Remark
Photographer
57-0067 (cn 17461) Arriving at the storage facility in July 1969, former 93rd Bomb Wing B-52F 57-0067 shows little evidence of the preservation process that prepared aircraft for lengthy sojourns in the desert. Despite this, it spent 25 years at Davis-Monthan before finally being scrapped in mid-1994.

General Dynamics F-111B Aardvark
Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (Municipal) (DMA / KDMA)
USA - Arizona, July 1969
Remark
Photographer
152714 / FV014 (cn A2-06) Tucked away amongst a gaggle of “Goats” (HU-16 Albatross) was a real surprise in the form of the first pre-production US Navy General Dynamics F-111B 152714. One of only seven examples of this ill-fated version to fly, this particular aircraft accumulated the less than impressive tally of 53 hours flight time before the project was abandoned. Remarkably, it survives in very dilapidated condition at Carson City, Nevada.
