Vickers VC10 C1
Off-Airport - Gloucestershire
UK - England, 1975
Remark
Photographer
X**** This picture was scanned from a slide I took in the summer of 1975. Living 20 miles west of Brize Norton in the early 'seventies the 10 Sqn VC10s were a common sight, and on several occasions I saw one in the circuit with one main gear retracted (whether deliberately or inadvertently I never discovered). I managed to photograph this one from home apparently dumping fuel at fairly high altitude; it was heading south-south-east at the time between Hatherop and Fairford.

XV295 (cn 382-4261) One of the RAF’s few remaining C-130Ks is seen here at Northolt for the night photocall, believed to be the type’s last public appearance before it is phased out completely this month after a 46-year career with the service.

UK - Wales, June 19, 2008
Remark
Photographer
ZG994 (cn 2206) This photo shows the remains of aircraft recovered by Forward Support (Fixed Wing) HQ at RAF St Athan following accidents. Alongside it are U.S. Marines AV-8B ***542 (Code 38), Jet Provost XS180 (Instructional Airframe Number 8238M) and Harrier GR3 XZ993. (Thanks to friend and colleague Warrant Officer Nige Hughes for access & Mark Dashwood for info)

TAP Portugal
Airbus A320-214
Geneva - International (Cointrin) (GVA / LSGG)
Switzerland, October 14, 2013
Remark
Photographer
CS-TNG (cn 945) This evening view of the Cointrin apron was taken from the 'Altitude’ restaurant that replaces the old viewing terrace on the top of the terminal building. It shows one of the radial departure gate complexes, the business aviation area on the northern boundary and beyond that part of the majestic Jura mountain range. TAP Flight 941 for Lisbon has just been pushed back and awaits taxi instructions, whilst BA and Swiss International Airbuses await their next rostas.

USA - Air Force
Boeing C-17A Globemaster III
Off-Airport - Herefordshire
UK - England, January 30, 2013
Remark
Photographer
**-**** This was one of a pair of C-17s that overflew my house this morning – the direct west-east route across the midlands seems to be used exclusively by USAF transport aircraft heading for Europe from the USA. On the original image the USAF lettering is clearly legible under the left wing.

Fairford (FFD / EGVA)
UK - England, July 21, 2013
Remark
Photographer
CSX62219 / RS-50 (cn 119) This C-27J flew a full aerobatic routine including full loops and barrel rolls by its crew, Major Fabio De Michele, Capt Gianmarco di Loreto and Chief Master Sergeant Ugo Sabeni of 311 Flight Test Squadron, Reparto Sperimentale Volo, the flight test centre at Pratica di Mare. They would be awarded the 'As the Crow Flies Trophy’, by the Friends of RIAT, presented by David Bywater, Non-Executive Director of the RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises. (Note the condensation vortices from the propeller tips.)

Airbus
Airbus A400M Atlas
Fairford (FFD / EGVA)
UK - England, July 21, 2013
Remark
Photographer
F-WWMZ (cn 006) RIAT 2013 demonstrated the manoevreability of modern military transport aircraft like never before, the C-27J performing loops and rolls and the A400M going through a routine of dramatic over-vertical wing-overs and steep climbs and dives which would win Airbus Military flight crew Karl-Heinz Mai and Anthony Flynn the Cannestra Trophy – awarded for the Best Flying Demonstration by an overseas participant.

Vickers VC10 K3
Brize Norton (BZZ / EGVN)
UK - England, September 22, 2013
Remark
Photographer
ZA147 / F (cn 882) 216 Sqn hosted an Enthusiasts’ Day at RAF Brize Norton today to mark the retirement of three aircraft types from service: the Tristar, the VC10 and the C-130K Hercules. ZA147 is one of the last two RAF VC10s, both of which flew their last operational sorties last week; they are destined to be flown to Duxford and Bruntingthorpe shortly, ending a 48-year association between the type and RAF Brize Norton.

Untitled
Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress (299P)
Cosford (EGWC)
UK - England, June 9, 2013
Remark
Photographer
G-BEDF / 124485/DF-A (cn 8693) 'Sally B’ made a rare and welcome appearance at the RAF Cosford Air Show, resplendent in the colour scheme and markings of 'Memphis Belle’, complete with the correct shades of Olive Drab and Neutral Gray. It is seen here during a superbly flown display that made due allowance for photographers, with two long, slow passes showing the upper surfaces to the crowd. (The chequered engine cowling is in memory of Ted White, who acquired and brought the aircraft to the UK in 1975, but was killed in 1982.)

English Electric Lightning T4
Kemble (EGBP)
UK - England, January 1978
Remark
Photographer
XM967 (cn B1/95052) This was the view from the Fosseway path, a public right-of-way across RAF Kemble when it hosted No. 5 Maintenance Unit. It shows the A-Site scrap dump with the remains of the Lightning T5 prototype that had been in the RAF Museum Reserve Collection at Colerne. (Thanks to Mike Freer for this information.) It still wears the original yellow trainer bands, obsolete by some 14 years when this picture was taken. How such an exhibit could have been dumped defies imagination.
