9Q-DBQ (cn 00347102) The airport has a 4,140m runway, one of the longest in Africa. The runway was built by the Soviet Unionin the mid-1970s in order to counter the United States military presence in the region. It was used as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle from 1970 until 1991 when the government fell. This plane tried to land in Bosasso airport but almost broke its landing gear leg. The crew managed to fly until alternative airport in Berbera where runway is much longer. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. |

RA-307 Is this photo rare? Oh, yes it is! there was no civilian flights to this airport for 15(!) years, but the airport is still active and saved in very good condition. Now Abkhazia is a independent state and soon the flights from Russia will begin!! |
