XE521 Described as an experimental compound helicopter, the (only) Rotodyne first flew in Nov 1957. There was airline and military interest but the programme was discontinued in 1962. One reason given was the noise from the pressure jets at the blade tips, however, the decision may have been political. A Vickers Vanguard can be seen at the left of the picture. |

9Q-CLD (cn 251) Picture courtesy of my wife Eleanor Rix. Destined to be the last Caravelle in scheduled passenger service (with Gabon Express) this aircraft was new when leased to Air Congo in Oct 1968. As 3D-KIK, operating a Transair cargo charter from Kinshasa (FIH), it crashed at Gisenyi (GYI) in Aug 2004 after diverting from Goma (GOM). An East African Airways DC-3 is parked alongside. |
