Untitled
Martin 404
Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (Municipal) (DMA / KDMA)
USA - Arizona, April 23, 2007
Remark
Photographer
N462M (cn 14153) During my visit to the museum last year all was normal so imagine my shock when I saw the cylinder protruding through the cowling of the #2 engine! All appeared legit to me until I received an email from Carlos Gomez. Carlos said that the cylinder protruding through the cowling was a front row cylinder but that it was protruding through the rear of the cowling above the rear row of cylinders. Gotta wonder what’s going on here?

Lockheed C-121A Constellation (L-749)
Tucson - Marana Regional (Northwest Reg / Avra Valley / Marana AF Aux No2 / Rillito) (AVW / AVQ)
USA - Arizona, March 15, 1997
Remark
Photographer
N494TW / 8609 (cn 2601) This is what a R3350 engine looks like when a cylinder lets loose and is ejected through the cowling. This occurred during a touch and go with the No.2 engine powered back to simulate an engine out. When No.1 let loose, we had two engines out on one side.

Tucson - Marana Regional (Northwest Reg / Avra Valley / Marana AF Aux No2 / Rillito) (AVW / AVQ)
USA - Arizona, March 15, 1997
Remark
Photographer
N494TW / 8609 (cn 2601) This is the result of a cylinder letting loose on a radial engine. It happened at the worst possible time on one of Avra Valley's relatively 'short' runways. The No.2 engine had been throttled back to simulate an engine failure. As we rotated after a 'touch and go' landing, the No.1 engine failed and, momentarily, both engines on the left side were producing little or no power. Captain Frank Lang brought the aircraft under control and we returned to Avra Valley Airport for a safe landing.

Untitled
Lockheed L-1649A Starliner
Auburn/Lewiston Municipal (LEW / KLEW)
USA - Maine, May 10, 2010
Remark
Photographer
N7316C (cn 1018) Lufthansa is undertaking the mother of all aircraft restorations in a hangar at Auburn-Lewiston Airport. Maurice Roundy's former Starliner has been stripped down to bare bones, with inspection and repair currently underway. No defect is too small to repair and the final product will be as close to the way she came out of the factory in 1957 as humanly possible. The first post restoration flight is tentatively scheduled for late 2011.
