44-86292 / 82/R Many years ago while "Enola Gay" was still dismantled and in store at the Silver Hill facility, I once had the eerie experience of being able to go on board and sit in the bombadier's seat. Of course this is the Superfortress which dropped the world's first atomic bomb used in warfare on Hiroshima on 6.8.45 |

55-3270 (cn 116) Of the 466 Otters built, 184 went to the US Army as U-1As. There are nice examples of the DHC-2, 3 & 4 at the US Army Transportation Museum, but the light conditions in this corner make the Otter difficult to photograph |

62-4532 (cn 158) This rescue helicopter was formerly displayed at Travis AFB, CA. The Huskie was notable for its intermeshing wooden rotors and was extensively used in Vietnam for recovery missions, and later for airbase fire-crash duties, known by the callsign "Pedro". Around 250 were built of which about a dozen have been preserved |

N520NA / 520 One of 9 Kestrel FGA.1s built as development aircraft between the experimental P.1127s and the production Harriers, first flying in 11.64 as XS694, then being transferred to the US Army for evaluation as 64-18266. Apparently became the second NASA 520 when the first (ex XS694/64-18268) crashed, substantial parts from the latter being used to make it airworthy again for NASA research use at Langley. They also had NASA 521 (ex XS689/64-18263, now displayed at the nearby Virginia Air & Space Center |

59-0428 (cn 752) The Voodoo became the principle aircraft of the 98th FIS stationed at Dover AFB in from mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. Their job was to defend Washington DC and the Eastern US during the Cold War period. This example has been smartly restored to represent one of them, although in fact its actual service history was with the 49th FIS (Griffiss AFB, NY), 60th FIS (Otis AFB, MA) and 107th TFG NY ANG (Niagara Falls) |

63-9760 / KA (cn 224) From 1967 to the mid-1970s this C-7 operated out of Cam Ranh Bay AB, South Vietnam with the 483TCW/TAW/TFW, typically into unprepared airstrips along the borders of Laos and Cambodia in support of Special Forces. 53-0230 (cn 17012) A total of 888 C-97s were built, of which 814 were KC-97 tankers. 53-0230 was assigned to the Strategic Air Command in 1955 at Westover AFB, Mass. In 1965 it was converted to KC-97L status at Hayes Aircraft Corp, Birmingham, AL, by the addition of two J47 jet engines and transferred to the Tennessee ANG. 59-0536 (cn 45587) My favourite exhibit at the superb AMC Museum. One of a handful surviving out of 50 built, the Cargomaster was designed as a long-range strategic airlifter, particularly for the transport of ICBMs. All were withdrawn in 1971 when metal fatigue was found. This example was delivered to the 1501ATW (MATS) at Travis AFB, CA in 4.61, the unit becoming 60MAW in 1966. Decommissioned and to Offutt AFB, NE for the SAC Museum in 6.71 and, like the C-124, flown to Dover inside a C-5 when the SAC Museum relocated in |

UR-CKL (cn 01348005) At rest till next evening with a load outbound via Malta as CVK7039. This An-12 is a former Soviet AF aircraft which later flew for Uzbekistan Airlines (UK-11109), Imtec (XU-365), Sasco (EX-034) and Click (EX-169). Now, it would be nice to see the only other aircraft in these colours so far, their An-74... |

51-2881 (cn 10870) Looks good but a false identity - never served with the USAF, being in fact originally RCAF C-119F 22118, assigned in 1953 to 436 Sqdn at Dorval. In 1956 during the Suez crisis used on UN shuttles between Italy and Egypt. Had enlarged radar nose fitted in 1957 and based to Downsview. Struck off RCAF charge 1965 but from 1969 operated as firebomber by Hawkins & Powers as N3559. Upgraded to Steward-Davis Jet-Pak spec in 1972 with J34 engine above fuselage and flown to Dover for preservation 10.91 |

61-2275 (cn 300-6001) The very first Starlifter to be built, making her maiden flight on 17.12.63, the 60th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight. Spent entire career as a test aircraft with AFSC at Wright-Patterson in numerous programs, the last being to test a new tension rope for NASA towing a QF-106 in the air. One of four early C-141A’s not converted to C-141B standard, all 270 in the main fleet undergoing the stretch. Joined C-141B 64-0626, parked alongside in 'lizard’ camouflage |
