Germany - Air Force
Messerschmitt Bf-109E-7
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 24, 2013
Remark
Photographer
3523 (cn 3523) This 109 was built as a E-1 in 1939 and fought in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. After upgrade to E-7 it was delivered to the Eastern Front and flown by Wulf-Dietrich Widowitz (36 victories). On 4th April 1942 Widowitz was shot down by a Hurricane and forced to make an emergency (but near perfect) landing on a frozen lake. The aircraft eventually sank through the ice and remained on the lake bed until recovery in 2003. It is pictured here awaiting restoration at the Planes of Fame museum

McCulloch XHUM-1 (MC-4A)
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 25, 2013
Remark
Photographer
133818 This is one of two XHUM-1 delivered to the Navy in June 1953 for evaluation as the tandem-rotor was an extremely new concept. This important piece of aviation history was restored to this immaculate display standard by the Yanks Air Museum between 2007-2011.

Douglas A-4A Skyhawk (A4D-1)
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 24, 2013
Remark
Photographer
139969 (cn 11334) This A-4 servedwith the Navy until retirement to AMARC during Oct. 65. She was in the desert for only a year and has now ended up, in this rather perilous state, in the storage yard of the Yanks Air Museum. Presumably she has been 'reclaimed' over the years for parts so that other A-4s may live.

Grumman TBF-1C Avenger
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 26, 2013
Remark
Photographer
05997 This venerable old Avenger was delivered to the Navy in Nov. 42 and served in the Pacific on board USS Enterprise, USS Saratoga and with VF-12 on Guadalcanal. She was SOC in July 1945 and became a Hollywood film prop before being acquired by Yanks in 1980. She is now undergoing restoration, part of which included removing lots of Japanese 27 mm bullets from her tail!.

Untitled
Kellett YG-1B
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 26, 2013
Remark
Photographer
37-381 (cn 108) (As I understand it) this is the only survivor of seven YG-1Bs sold to the US Army to establish in 1938 a rotary aircraft school at Dayton, OH. She was then re-engined with a 300 hp Jacob R-915-3 radial engine to become the only XR-3 built. Fortunately this interesting piece of aviationhistory has survived and is now on display at the super Yanks Air Museum.
