**-**** This photo was shot in 1960 at NAS Dallas when I was there for the National Model Airplane Championships. During the day the base would be closed between 8:00AM to 5:00 PM and if anything flew it was these F-86L’s that were fully armed with air to air rockets. The air guard commander let me take photos of the F-86L’s but told me to not get near the planes with three day glow strips of tape on the side for that indicated that they were fully armed for intercept. Shot with my Brownie Starflex camera.

147734 (cn 12498) This is a photo of Skyhawk 147734 flown into NAS Dallas by Lt. J.G. Woody Grover the evening before. Woody located a previous photo I posted of his plane on Airliners.net so I wanted to upload another photo I think he would enjoy. I was 16 years old at the time and just could not believe I was running loose on a Navy base. 147734 went to MASDC as 3A0359 Mar 8, 1972. This photo was shot with my trusty Brownie Starflex 127 camera.

141016 (cn 299) This is a photo of a R4Y-1 that I photographed back in the summer of 1960 at NAS Dallas. I was at the National Model Airplane Championships that was sponsored by the U.S. Navy. Late in the evening I would walk all over the base trying to take interesting photos of the Navy planes. There is a photo of this plane in the data base shot 46 years after I shot is this photo. I was 16 at the time and all I had was a point and shoot Brownie.

145568 / 201 This F8U-2 was parked at NAS Dallas and I photographed it as the sun was going down, kissing the horizon. As a 16 year old in 1960 I did not know this was called the golden hour in photography. Looking back now I see what a great opportunity I had to take photos of operational Navy planes in great lighting conditions and I wish I had shot more film and had something other than my $16.00 point and shoot camera. Brownie Starflex with fixed lens.

53-0987 (cn 201-431) This photo is of a F-86L part of the Texas Air National Guard in 1960 at NAS Dallas. The Guard commander took me over to the flight line in his staff car when I mentioned to him I wanted to build a scale model of the F-86D. This is the plane he let me photograph and sit in the cockpit, turned on the master and let me move the stick around and hear the power boosted controls. For a 16-year-old kid who loves airplanes, it doesn’t any better than that. First photo for the database. Brownie Starflex Camera

146337 / NJ This is a photo of one of 12 McDonnell F3H-2 Demons parked in a line on the ramp at NAS Dallas in July of 1960. In the back ground you can see the Texas ANG F-86D's on the field that were the only planes that would fly during the time the base was closed for the AMA National Model Airplane Championships. I was 16 at the time and it was like being in a candy store. Brownie Starflex Camera fixed lens.

147039 This is a photograph of a F8U-2N at the main hangar NAS Dallas during the 1960 National Model Airplane Championships. A Navy seaman tugged a brand-new Crusader over for us to look at after a gun test, still had gun dust on the plane. The Vought factory was on the base and Crusaders were everywhere. I climbed up on some scaffolding trying to get a shot into the cockpit with my Brownie Starflex Camera.

148544 / 544 (cn 12737) This is a photo that I took when I was 16 years old at the 1960 Model Airplane Championships, NAS Dallas in July 1960. This photo was taken right at engine shut down. The base would be closed from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM then they would start flight operations with all us kids having the run of the place. I call this the miracle photo for it was the only one from that trip that was properly exposed and in focus from my point and shoot camera.
